Hello everyone, I am feeling a bit distant from my healthcare team at the moment so am making a lot of decisions about my treatment on my own. Thought talking to other diabetics might help! Anyone else feeling this?

Hi Becky and welcome to the forum

Would you like to tell us a bit more about your diabetes? Have you been diagnosed long? Are you on MDI or an insulin pump? Which insulin(s) do you use? Do you have Freestyle Libre sensors or are you finger pricking?

Yes, the pandemic has meant that quite a lot of diabetics have been left to muddle along on their own a lot of the time. Being here on the forum has been really useful to bounce ideas off others and learn new tricks and strategies. It is a fantastic resource and I am sorry that you didn't come across it sooner. I hope you find it as hugely beneficial as I have over the past couple of years.

If you have any specific concerns about your diabetes management, feel free to ask and why not come and take part in the "Group 7day waking average" thread linked below, where we post our morning waking reading and discuss our plans for the day or have a bit of banter. It is a bit like a virtual coffee morning for diabetics. It is a massively long thread so don't try to read it from the beginning, just jump in and post this morning's reading and say "hi" . You will soon get the hang of it.

Hope to see you there but feel free to post any concerns you have and more info here.

Welcome to the forum @B3cky

Many people have found that their regular appointments have been cancelled or switched to phone or video calls. I certainly find this forum helpful in addressing questions that I have, and I have been pleased to have access to DSNs and my Consultant via email.

is your diabetes managed at the GP Practice or with the specialist team at the hospital. I was offered options at the hospital, and have used a video call. I was quite reluctant to do this, but as I knew the team it was certainly better than nothing. I also did a pump switch using video training. If you are concerned do contact your team

if you would like to tell us a bit about how you manage your T1.
MDI or pump? What insulin(s) do you use?

Do ask any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here, and there is a wealth of experience to draw on Fro practical tips or just a good rant to people who ‘get it’.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Must admit I've very rarely had any input from hcp's regarding my diabetes so learnt at a very early age to look after myself as no one else would 🙂 As long as I have the supplies I need life goes on and this forum is fab for picking up tips and ideas from fellow type 1's 🙂

Any help/advice you need just ask as there is always someone who can help out.

Thanks so much for your replies!
I am type 1 - diagnosed 27 years ago
I use Omnipod insulin pump with Novorapid and Dexcom G5 CGM
I am managed by a very competent (if busy!) team at the hospital and rarely engage with my GP on diabetes issues.

It’s been a very turbulent couple of years (probably for almost everyone!) but my A1c has been obstinately hovering around 7.8%.

I had a video appointment with a diabetes nurse (which took 3 months from 1st request) but due to a clerical error, wasn’t made aware of it. I then had to wait 3 more months for another one, which I found insanely irritating.

I’ll definitely join the morning coffee group tomorrow!

thanks

Hello @B3cky welcome to the forum.

So sorry you are feeling left out from your D team mine is the other way, have access to the
hospital team every week day and have my BGL`s tested every 3 months with a follow up
from the DN the following week. If I have a problem I can call the DSN`s at the hospital also
the Dietician if needed, do join us for the morning readings and enjoy the banter, we look
forward to your contribution to this wonderful forum, take care stay safe.

Hello again 🙂
As we have already said ask away with questions we also have a pump forum so delve in there as well 🙂 Have you seen or got the book pumping insulin by John Walsh? If not it's well worth the investment.
As you know pumping can be and is very frustrating at times :( Turbulence is normally sorted by a basal test so might be worth trying that if you haven't already done so.

Welcome to the forum @B3cky

And yes I know just what you mean about feeling a bit cut off from the regular checkups. I have got my lot into a system where i get annual GP review for weight, BP, toe tickle, prescription tweaks etc, and an annual pump clnic - and I try to make these approx 6 months apart.

Haven’t been seen by anyone in real life for over a year, and have only had one A1c. No sign of the annual eye screening either.

Like @SB2015 I did have a remote pump switch though, which all went smoothly, and A1cs I find far less important since shelling out for sensors full time as I can use Time in Range as a more nuanced reflection of how things are going.
