Having checked out the carbs on a variety of mince pies, I have seen that they r quite high. I try to keep to100-120carbs per day which is quite high for a lot of people here. This will be my 3rd year as T2 and I have a much better understanding. I wonder how others manage festive far? I think I will take the midway option and stick to 1/2 a mince pie.

Yes, mince pies are high carb for their size! I find home-made ones are better, especially if they have minimal pastry on top rather than a full ‘lid’.

You can also get filo pastry mincemeat parcels which are usually a little lower in carbs.

Thank you, I will hunt out the filo pastry mince pies. I am derply ashamed but my cooking skills are strictly limited...

I have never tried this but I can imagine mince meat would go very well with a lump of cheddar. Like an alternative to something like quince jelly.
Or am I barking up the wrong (Christmas) tree?

I had one when I accidentally injected NovoRapid instead of Levemir at bedtime about 6 weeks ago 😳 and had to stuff my face with carbs to soak it up. Lidl ones are 45g carbs per little pie.😱 That is almost a whole days worth of carbs for me in 3 little mouthfuls!! It was naughty but very nice. Had to sit up half the night waiting to see if I had got it right and my levels were steady afterwards before going to bed, but did enjoy it.
Surprisingly I have managed not to make that mistake again despite the cure being very tasty!
I know as a Type 1, I could treat myself to one occasionally and just inject insulin to cover it but it could easily become a slippery slope!

Ooh! I like that idea! I love fruit and cheese. Tend to stick to fermented fruit with it these days... hick!🙄

I think your average mince pie is around 40g carbohydrate, which is a third more than I aim for in a whole meal. They were a big favourite of mine, especially brandy or rum varieties, but I won't go near one now if it means taking a 40g carb hit.

You are correct, I was really surprised, and my main meal is about 30 carbs but that fills me up for ages.

No big fan of mince pies, wife loves them.

Prefer piece of stollen cake, well worth few units of insulin.

Love mincemeat, rich fruit cake, Xmas pud and panettone, Pete also loves stollen but I really don't like marzipan. Dried fruit is always going to be mega high carb though however you serve it up. Mincemeat may 'only' have very dark brown Barbados sugar in it plus the odd grated carrot and a Bramley or 3, plus however much spirit of choice and all the spices, but is still solid sugar by and large however you serve it up!

My Christmas treat is panettone...mmmmm....rationed to one slice at a time, and just the classic please, not yer choc-covered or drizzled in icing or any other abomination.

With mince pies we tend to buy mini ones, or ones with a lattice top. A little goes a long way these days, and I've never been a fan of rich fruit Christmas cake or Christmas pudding. I don't like marzipan either, but Mr Marten does, so we have a small box of it in the 'Christmas cupboard' just for him. Also in the cupboard are a few treats I've collected like choc cherry liqueurs and stem ginger. We are pretty abstemious foodwise most of the time, and as we all know there are no carbs on Christmas Day or birthdays 😉

A good stollen is delicious - my mouth is watering just thinking about it! I also like a nice quality Yule Log. The more expensive ones are less sugary. Obviously, it’s much harder if you’re diet only, but I take insulin or use a slice as ‘fuel’ for a walk.

I like homemade mince pies but I’m not a great fan of shop-bought, and to me they aren’t worth the carbs. I do like a bit of brandy cream though - a great low carb option :D

Carb-wise, I find Xmas Pudding the worst. I normally buy a small nice quality one, but the carbs are shocking! That’s one food where the carbs put me off.

I used to make zimt sterne. They are mostly ground almonds and egg (plus cinnamon) so probably low carb if you don't overdo the icing sugar ... and Christmasy.

It's torture walking past the mince pies and stollen etc in Aldi they look so nice😡

After rigorous research into Mince pies and Stollen cake carbs. The result is Stollen cake bites from Waitrose, coming in at 9 carbs. Close 2nd were the stollen slices from Aldi 15 carbs Thank you all the advice. The Waitrose ones will last for quite a while.

I hope they pass the taste test!

Thanks
Time will tell...
