I found a millet grain plant yesterday on farmland and had to look it up never seen one before... it is gluten free and another that it is ok for diabetics and a contradiction to that said it is high in carbs...help. which one? anyone know? Thank you. I would not eat it off the land but just generally is millet ok?

I like to add some millet in with my rice. It has a lighter texture and I like it. You can also cook it, cool it, and make salads with it, or have it as a hot porridge.

Whether it’s ok for people with diabetes is up to you as an individual. I believe it’s low GI. Why not try some and see? It’s pretty cheap. Watch your portion size and test to see if it suits you.

Thank you. I shall have a go.

Just to be clear, it’s millet grains that I add to rice (or cook alone). They look like tiny balls. You can also get millet flakes for muesli, etc, and millet flour too. I buy mine in a health shop but some supermarkets stock it on occasion.

I used to feed millet to my budgies. They loved it, but they did get rather plump.

Fortunate none of us are budgies then, isn’t it? 🙂 Millet is a low GI grain and very tasty as well as being gluten-free. It’s eaten all over the world - and has been for thousands of years. There are lots of different kinds. You can even make alcohol from it.

My BMI is 19.7, I’m not a budgie and I’ve eaten millet for years.
