Milk chocolate v dark chocolate

Just wanted to share. I always loved milk chocolate, but suddenly realised it is way too sweet and a bit of dark chocolate is preferable. Is this another sign of growing older? Sigh

Since diagnosis ive switched over to at least 80% dark.......im used to it now......milk chocy seems too sweet

I tried some 85% and that was a step too far so will stick with the 70% but definitely not milk far too sweet.

Tastes can change throughout life, there's things I like now whereas 30 year back didn't, vice versa also.

Mind always liked chocolate, dark milk white it makes no difference.

I have always preferred dark chocolate even as a child but I do find that milk or white chocolate tastes very sweet now so I don't eat a lot of it. Now I have diabetes that's not a bad thing.:D

I've always been a mainly dark chocolate fan. My favourite was Cadbury's Bourneville but these days I go for Lindt 85% dark. Unfortunately, if I have a square of CDM I always want to have another one, and then another one......so I find it's best to say no.

I also developed a taste for Kernow 70% Extra Dark after a holiday in Cornwall many years ago and my wife orders some from the Fowey Sweet Shop for me for Xmas, Valentine's Day, Easter and my birthday.

Well I'm old and I still love milk chocolate. I've never liked plain (when did it start being called "dark"?) chocolate - and I eat Milky Bar as an act of defiance against the macho "I only eat 135% cocoa chocolate" brigade.

White chocolate is simply disgusting as far as my tastebuds are concerned, yuk yuk and thrice yuk. I also loathe icing of any sort, which I never imagined could happen. Worst is fondant icing. Eldest daughter who is a classically trained chef knew instantly so the first grandchild's birthday party I went to when little one was upset when I was still wondering how to not eat any but not upset tiny, she instantly told her that of course grandma would enjoy some cake but because she'd eaten so much already, and was far too full to enjoy it right now, she was taking her slice home with her to eat later once she'd got a bit more room.

Now - it's the grandchildren's children's cakes! - and it's always blooming lovely cake underneath the icing. Which curiously always falls straight into our bin!

I love milk chocolate but have to avoid it as like @Martin.A I can’t just eat one or 2 squares, I like Lindt 90% or it might be 95% dark chocolate. One or two square broken into smaller pieces is enough. But not cheap to buy.

Partly an age thing, partly a “Kraft taking over Cadburys” thing. I devoured Dairy Milk, Mars bars and crème eggs in my teens (pre-D), but really don’t like any milk chocolate now. Never liked white. Fortunately we have a Hotel Chocolat factory shop not too far away!

"The Milky Bars are on me!"

Old Jamaica was my favourite but finding it now is rare n i spose now type 2 dont thin the raisins wud help with sugar levels?
I remember quite liking that as a kid - but only because I thought there was rum in it

My partner would like to boycott Cadbury's for that reason - but likes Cadburys chocolate too much to do that 😉. When I lived in the West Midlands I used to love going to Cadbury World and hearing about the Quaker origins of the Company. I have several books about it - including this one, with a luscious purple cover:

My preference for chocolate tends to be based on cocoa/sugar ratio rather than colour.
I like chocolate to taste of chocolate rather than just sweet although it can be sweet AND chocolatey.

It also depends upon how it is used. Generally, I like chocolate as just chocolate - I don't like chocolate mousse or chocolate milkshake and I even find chocolate cake a bit "meh". However, chocolate chip cookies are not bad and strawberry cookies are taken to the next step when you add white chocolate. Yes, I am another who does not mind white chocolate. If it is in the right setting.

As for icing, I see it as the cheap bit they put on cakes so they can sell it for more per kg.
At Christmas, we usually have two Christmas cakes. Both are iced. My Mum bakes her own, makes her own marzipan and icing. MIL buys hers. The home-baked cake is about twice as high as the other and has less icing on it. At least 2/5 of the bought cake height is icing.

Lindt's my favourite chocolate - but only their milk version. I wonder if I can find a research paper that says it's safe for diabetics to eat as much white (or Caramac) chocolate as they want .

I don't generally have a sweet tooth: I'm not bothered about icing or cakes or biscuits. I found those things quite easy to give up (or at least restrict myself with) when I developed Late Onset Type 1. Cheese is my downfall though 🙄.

Does your partner still like Cadbury’s? I tried one bite after the takeover, went “ugh, it’s Hersheys!” and never touched it again. And this lady never did love Milk Tray!

Went to Cadbury World on a work trip before the D diagnosis. Took full advantage of the freebies and was sick when I got home, though I’m sure that was entirely down to the smell of diesel from the somewhat ancient coach we used 😉

Yes, although my partner has managed to boycott Creme Eggs, saying that they don't taste the same - and are smaller than they used to be.

Can you still get Caramac?
My last memory of it was an awesome Caramac baked cheesecake a friend made. Not sure I have had it since my diagnosis but surely there would be plenty of fat to slow down the carb/glucose digestion.

With the exception of Caramac cheesecake, cheese and chocolate are two things that I tend to keep apart despite both going well with red wine. Recently, I read that milk chocolate goes with Port but I have not had a chance to try it out.

As for Cadburys chocolate. I went to Cadbury World about a month after my diagnosis. It was my first memory of injecting in public. I wasn’t confident in whether I could eat chocolate so tried the diabetic stuff. Thankfully, it has since been banned in the UK. Otherwise, I would have banned it due to the terrible taste.
Nowadays, I prefer Tony’s chocolate. It has a great story as well as great taste. I am hoping it doesn’t go the same way as Green and Blacks and get taken over by one of the big guys. That would be a sell out too far.
