Mighty Greggs sausage roll

Hi All,

What are people's thoughts on a Gregg's sausage roll (and pasty in general)?

The nutrition bumph says 348 calories per roll with 24g carbs and 0 sugar. That doesn't seem unreasonable every now again as part of a balanced carbs-calorie meal.

Thoughts?

I'm prediabetic for reference

Most food is okay as part of a balanced diet. I like them as a treat. Its about the same as some slices of bread in terms of carbs/

Well I avoid them not for the carbs, because I find Gregg's food rather repulsive.

I seem to recall finding that things like pastries (Café Nero Sausage roll thing, which I do like) didn't really cause me much of an issue when I tried one. I put that down to the amount of fat in it slowing down the glucose absorption (I tried one for the first time about a year or so after getting levels back to normal and saw a peak of around 8 that came down within 3 hours.)

It depends on what your goal is - weight loss, getting BG down to normal or just generally healthy eating. I avoid them even though I know I can handle them because I tend to prefer to eat healthier stuff, and a long period of low-carb seems to have changed my tastebuds somewhat!

@piw1uk - if it is a choice between a Greggs sausage roll and not eating, it would be not eating.

What seems reasonable doesn't work for me - never did. I stick to low carb, avoiding grain no sugar or starchy foods. It is just the easy and sensible option as I got to be a very bad diabetic following a 'healthy' diet.

I tend to avoid anything made with pastry but that's my choice. For 24g carb I would want something more nutritious than a sausage roll.

If you are eating a healthy diet to get your HbA1c back normal, you could have occasional sausage rolls and pastries but they will increase the time it takes to reach your goal.

I miss sausage rolls. I have recently eaten salmon and pesto wrapped in filo pastry with acceptable BG readings. Have been thinking about using the meat from a Heck 97% sausage in a bit of filo, could be a decent alternative .

Hi All,

Thanks for that. My BMI/weight is fine, just a bit of a spare tyre and I exercised alot before I got my HBAC1 results. Cholesterol is below 5. So it's about controlling the amount of carbs and calories going in, which I didn't used to. So once a week probably OK if I'm balanced the rest of the day, it's just whether that spikes the BG compared with 24g of a healthier carb source.

Fun times

I used to eat far too many pies and savoury pastries but, six weeks into my dietary changes, I can honestly say that they are the things that I miss eating least. Mind you, I have had to unsubscribe from the Pie Mash and Liquor Appreciation Facebook group as folks posting their ‘double double’ pictures was putting temptation too much in my way. I’m not so sure I could resist a bacon roll if one were put in front of me though!
