Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hy good morning this is my first thread to you I was wandering as metformin is the diabetic tablet that I and most of us take I'm level 2 I was wandering if like me anyone else gets severe stomach pains whilst taking it and is there another tablet to take instead off

Lots of people have reported tummy upsets with it. There is a slow release version which is supposed to have less side effects. Also if you take the pill with food before and after - like a pill sandwich! I have tummy and bowel issues and told I can't take it at all.

Medication usually depends on how high your HbA1c was, although not all doctors will try the diet/exercise approach first. I'm lucky and managing on just a low carb diet and exercise. I've got my HbA1c down to 48 in just over 3 months, so almost in the pre-diabetic range. Your empagliflozin makes you pee out more glucose.

Thanks when I found out in June that I was a diabetic my hbA1c was 161 and I was put on 2 1000mg metformin a day currently taking 1 metformin a day but my hbA1c is now down to 53 I'm seeing my doctor today to discuss wether he could put me on a lower dose because of my count

That's a great reduction in just 6 months - congratulations.

Well done!

I was totally miserable taking Metformin and Atorvastatin - I binned them three years ago and found I didn't need them in the first place.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with the tablets @Tottenham58 :(

some people find it gets easier over time, others find it makes a big difference if they are eaten with food, and still others find that the slow release version works best for them. But as you can see there are some people who just can’t get in with Metfartin at all.

Best bet is to have a chat with your Dr or surgery nurse and explain the difficulties you are having.

Welcome to the forum Tottenham, and well done on such a reduction in such a short time.

As others have said it will be worth you talking to your healthcare team about what options are available to you. I know that many here have been able to switch to the slow release metformin, which was easier to cope with,
Others have been able to use diet changes and exercise to bring their levels back under control.

Let us know how you get on.

Welcome Tottenham, I am currently taking 1 x 500mg metformin daily, I find the metformin works well to help bring the blood glucose down, my body seem to be ok on it currently.

If you can reduce your blood glucose by cutting down on carbs you might well feel a lot better overall. My metabolism seems to have recovered on a low carb diet. I know that I now react to carbs by releasing insulin and putting on weight, but symptoms of diabetes seem to be a thing of the past.
