Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
My husband was diagnosed with type 2 18 months ago and since July last year has lost 5.5 stone on Slimming World. As he was 23.5 stone when he started, he was put on 2 x 500mg am and pm and has been fine. We are also walking (building since October) as we are in training for the Moon Walk next weekend. I am so proud of him. Last year, his bloods showed he had gone from 1 point away from needing to go straight onto insulin on diagnosis to pre-diabetic in under a year. he is due for blood tests in 2 weeks but has lost the 5.5 stone since the last bloods and was, at the time, told to continue on the 4 per day.
However, I am getting concerned. Recently he has started falling asleep willy nilly and is complaining about feeling like he did pre diagnosis - tired, falling asleep if he sits for too long, fatigue etc
I wondered if he is on too much metformin now.
Has anyone else had similar experiences?
Thank you
Beth🙂

Hi Beth, welcome to the group.....

On it's own, metformin shouldn't cause drowsiness or fatigue, this is more likely due to BG levels.... Does your husband test? Many members of this board advocate testing despite what the Medical Profession advise for us T2's not on hypo inducing drugs. With a spot Blood Glucose reading you can determine what the BG level is & remedy that. Unfortunately you will likely to have to self-fund; the general advice it to purchase the SD Codefree from Amazon, along with several hundred test strips.

Thank you Martin. He does have a test kit that he purchased when he thought things were going wrong 2 years ago. Since he was diagnosed he hasn’t needed to use it... til now. I will suggest it. Thank you

Yay stitch147! We are so excited! Weather is looking good too. Is it your first one? We are pink 6 :( so right at the back! Hey ho
Thank you for the suggestion of blood testing. It’s so frustrating as he has never been fitter or lighter in the 15 years I’ve known him!

It is very frustrating. I lost 7 stone before being diagnosed to hopefully reduce my risk of diabetes, as it runs in my family. This will be my 4th marathon distance walk and my second Moonwalk. I only made it to 18 miles last year. But I'm determined to finish this year. I'm in purple 2.

Well done on the weight loss keep up the good work 🙂

Wow Stitch that is amazing! You will do it this year. We have done 3x 21 milers the last 3 weeks so we know we are nearly there. We walked along the toe path between battersea bridge and Hampton court. Good luck for this year and let me know how you get on! X

That's a fantastic route. You might want to look at the Thames Path challenge in September, it's from Putney Bridge to just past Hampton Court, it's 25pm (16ish miles). It's a lovely walk on a nice day.

Wow Beth, sounds like your hubby has done amazingly well so I do hope that checking his bg levels will lead to an improvement. Stitch147 that is also an amazing weight loss you achieved, well done :D
