I am taking merckformin 500 mg normal since middle of June. I had to go up to 2 tablets per day in the first two month gradually. My doctor was very satisfied with the blood sugar results middle of August, but he gave me medicine for 3 more month. I am also cuious what will his next step be in November when I go back to him. Maybe he will give less medicine or try without medicine for some time with control.

If the medication is working by helping to improve your blood sugar then you’ll likely keep taking it or increase the dose not reduce it.

I’ve separated your post and its reply into a separate thread @mandan so that responses to you get mixed up with the other topic 🙂

We have had people who have conversations with their Dr about reducing or dropping their medication, but this often happens after their levels have reduced down towards non-diabetes levels.

If you would like an opportunity to manage your diabetes without medication, it might be a good idea to have a conversation with your Dr, so that they know your preference and where you’d like to end up if possible.

If your hba1c gets into non-diabetic levels, they might stop it. Mine was reduced after 3 months to 500mg and I was recently told there's a 'case' for stopping it completely and seeing 'what happens'.

I stopped my metformin after 3 months because I wasn't eating enough carbs to justify taking it. I was down to pre-diabetic levels at that point and was very happy with my new way of eating. I asked for and was given a blood sugar monitor and strips and lancets so I could check my blood sugars and I have kept things under excellent control ever since (coming up for four years next January) and progressed to non-diabetic levels for my last hba1c.

In my case though I spent most of my time cooking from basic ingredients and working out recipes so I would always have lovely food and not be tempted by carby stuff. I am mostly housebound for other reasons than diabetes so I have had plenty of time to devote to this and I have a scientific/medical background and I have always been an experimenter who loves a challenge. It became my special interest for a long time.

These days I have it all worked out and I have more free time to spend on other things so my approach may not work for everyone although it is easier these days as there are more ready prepared products on the market and some very good websites online for plenty of inspiration but ready made items are still very pricy.

I also changed lots of things in my life generally and found ways of reducing my stress levels and I took up breathing exercises and started listening to calming meditation audiobooks at bedtime and drank a lot more water each day to make sure I was always well hydrated.

I also increased my activity levels from zero to moderate.

I think for most people it takes a long time or maybe it never happens in the way it did for me, for all sorts of reasons.
