Hello
I am on alogliptin and metformin. The metformin is twice a day. Is there any reason why I have to take it with the meal, which I keep forgetting in the evening, or can I just take it at bedtime with my other medication?
Many thanks Jane

The main reason to take Metformin with food is to prevent digestive upset which is a common side effect. You could take it with breakfast or lunch if remembering to take it in the evening is proving difficult but I would be reluctant to take it without some food on my stomach.

I would certainly take it with food and not at bedtime. I take mine with my main meal. I take 2 500mg tabs with my main meal of slow release Metformin, if it's difficult for you to remember, then take it first thing, but you should really consult your diabetic nurse or your GP as to what they think is best for you.

Did you have much reaction to the Metformin when you started @Namaste?

It would be worth asking your surgery nurse for their advice as to the best way (or if it‘s possible) to take your meds together - perhaps the timing of the alogliptin could be moved?

When I was on Met X 4 a day I always took then just before breakfast then dinner otherwise I would be on the loo in the small hours.
