Hi all need some help. Had type 2 for coming to a year this end of oct. Prior to being told i had type 2 had in process lost 4 stone. Nearly at my 5stone target. Ive noticed recently that my metformin is not doing the trick at the moment. My readings are higer than recently. Is this my body saying that i need a higher dose? Also what is the limit of what you can have on metformin slow release? Thank you all.

Hi Matt, there are many reasons your BG readings can raise.... Health, infections, weather, stress... In fact anything, I'd take a few moments to reflect on anything that has changed or is changing...... For example I had a recent ear infection which I noticed in my BG a couple of days before I noticed physical symptoms.

Thanks Martin, that has helped. I've got the nurse next week for my readings. Im gonna have a good chat. 🙂 All still very new for me 🙂

the common maximum dose of metformin is 2000mg (4 tablets) split into 2 doses, I have seen the maximum dose stated as 2500mg. It would help us to answer you if you listed your readings (esp morning) and current dosage.

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum 🙂 One thing to consider is if your diet has changed recently, now that we are in Autumn - many people start eating different things when the days get shorter and colder. Do you test your levels before and after eating, so you can see how the food affects you? If not, have a look at Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand how to do this efficiently and effectively 🙂 Also, I'd recommend having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter , and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. I know it's not your first year, but if you haven't read it, it could still help 🙂 The more you know and understand, the easier things become 🙂 Plus, of course, you can ask any questions you may have here! 🙂

Thanks all. My readings have been around 10- 13 in first thing. Diet I have controlled to the best I could also on slimming world.I have noticed my chest does not feel good from a previous illness, I think it may be because it's getting colder and that's when I start to notice my chest not great. I rang Dr and been advised that my bloods have gone up to 61 for the last 3 months. He wants me to increase metformin 2 twice a day and possibility of having low dose of gliclazide. I'm gonna continue with that along with my excercise and see what happens. Thanks all I will deffo have a look at the links 🙂

2 metformin twice a day is par for the course. I would try and agree to that increase and see how you go before the addition of gliclazide. If you drive then read up on the rules for your license (especially if insulin is ever suggested).

Personally I would try & avoid Sulfonylureas, having had a less than pleasant experience with them last year.... Try other options first.

Thank you sorry Martin still learning. Is Sulfonylureas the same as gliclazide?

NP, it's great to help members....

Sulfonylureas are the class of drug, gliclazide is just a brand name, the brand most common in the US is Glyburide

That programme doesn't have to be our future. No reason why you can't lead a long & healthy life with D. Don't be influence by Weetabix man!🙂

Hey all so far sugars have dropped. Feel ok at begining of day. But stomach feels weird come evening. Assuming this is the increased dose of metformin sr doing its thing?

Yes like to be are you taking it with food?
Hey 🙂 yes taking with food. Not being crude its not like running to the loo like on normal metformin. It just feels tense but like being pressed down on you tummy. Will see how i am in morning 🙂
