Metformin and periods.

Hi newbie here one for the ladies please…….
diagnosed t2 18th April started Metformin 500mg a day for a week & gradually increasing to 2000mg a day Ive reached 1500mg and have now started to bleed with horrific period cramps (52yrs old not had a period since Feb 24 and on mini pill) so had a phone call today with the nurse practitioner as I can’t see a GP until 21st May I had to tell him
that metformin is also precribed for PCOS and I think it’s causing me to have a period so he has changed the Metformin to a slow release metformin will this bring any relief being as it’s the same drug? I know slow release is better tolerated but it’s still metformin if it’s making me bleed then surely fast or slow release will have the same outcome?

Apparently it can be a rare side effect and is something that I would say needs urgent investigation.
I do not see that slow release would make a difference as the effect of the medication can alter hormone balance.
I think as you can't get an appointment for nearly 2 weeks I would ring 111 for advice, to put your mind at rest.
