Just to add my own experience...when I asked the DN if I could come off metformin completely due to hba1c of 36, she said she preferred to keep me on one a day as it "helps protect the heart and kidneys". Now I'm completely confused! It's great that you are being sent to the Renal clinic for further investigation from the experts. Best of luck x
I have heard of possible benefits being against heart disease and strokes and even some cancers have been mentioned, but not kidneys. In fact i have recently tried to find out if good/bad for kidneys and read not so good if kidney disease is present and needs monitoring closely in these cases or avoided in people with low kidney function due to possible lactic acidosis. I read it is safe to take if you have healthy or low degree of kidney disease. There may be people far more knowledgeable than myself who can either confirm or deny this is true.
I would like definitive answer myself really as i have very low degree of kidney disease and have option of coming off Metformin since lowering my BG to 36 but am happy to carry on with low dose of 500mg if it has health benefits.
