Hi,

Please could anyone recommend a meter with the meal markers but not with any sort of motor ie the sort where the test strips are in a drum. I'm currently using the Freestyle Freedom Lite which i really do like but being a bit of a gadget person...

Thanks
Gill

I've got the Accu-Chek Aviva Expert, it's an awsome gadget! It has meal markers, you can set carb ratios so it can calculate your insulin doses for you and it takes into account your correction doses, how much insulin is still in your system, any exercise, stress, illness etc. And it plots graphs on its colour screen! You can tell that I like it can't you?

I got given it by my nurse, in an attempt to cheer me up I think, I was very down about testing and was useless at keeping a diary, this meter solved that problem.

Must get the Aviva Expert. The aviva nano also has pre and postprandial markers🙂

Hi,

Thanks to Natalie & Toby for your replies 🙂.

Is there anyone who has the Bayer Contour meter & what do you think of it?

I was an early adopter of the Ascensia Contour USB meter (I think that's the one you're referring to); in March 2010 I felt the need to replace my old Contour, because new computers no longer have the old-style serial ports so it won't be possible to upload readings from the old Contours for much longer, so I Googled for "usb blood glucose meter" and the Contour came up as the first result! I was pleased as it meant that I didn't need to change my strips or lancets prescriptions. (And by a spooky coincidence, the batteries of the old Contour -- which had lasted since I bought it, just over five years before -- finally ran out two days after I got the new one.)

It's a good basic meter, and I like the fact that the monitoring software is in the meter's flash RAM -- and has been rewritten in Java, so is no longer Windows-only but will run on any computer which has a JVM installed, including Macs and Linux machines.

The only thing I don't like is that the one bit of the monitoring software which I actually used -- the facility to export to CSV -- has been removed. :( I want to find out how to get around that problem...

What do you mean by meal markers..............?

I use the InsulinX, they use the freestyle lite strips, so the same as your current meter...........

Calculates insulin doses and corrections by referring to pre programmed figures...........its really quite cool actually, you can even upload a picture which will then appear on the 'apply blood now' screen.......

As it has this bolus calculator you need to be competent with carb counting and dose adjustment, whether you have done a course or not, as it has to be issued from your/a DSN

The Contour USB can optionally label a reading as "Before Meal" or "After Meal". I think that kind of thing is what whiskysmum meant.

Hi novorapidboi26 & robert@fm,

Yes Robert this is exactly what i meant. A Bayer Contour (not the usb or the link one) arrived last week when i was successful after filling in a form on the Bayer website to see whether i was eligible to receive a Contour meter. It's great because as well as the "Before Meal" or "After Meal" markers it also has a "record diary" marker where you can mark if you have a test result which you think is different in some way. Also it has a "post meal test alarm" so you can set it to remind you to test 2.5, 2.0, 1.5 or 1.0 hrs after your meal which i'm always forgetting to do, i know this alarm is only useful if you are around to hear it.
I spoke with my dsn earlier to see if 1. the surgery can supply the Contour test strips & the Microlet lancets & 2. if she will be happy for me to use this "new" meter. The surgery can supply the strips & lancets & Lynn is very happy for me to use this new meter instead of my other one, tho i've to carry on with the other meter until my 200 strips which arrived on Monday have been used up :(.

I've think i've seen the InsulinX meter which you have, it looks good but i think / know i need to be a LOT more competent with the carb counting.

Hi Whiskymum,

I got given the Bayer Contour by my DN and am finding it ok. It's little different from my other meter but I had been using that one for 2 months and this new one for 2 days so I'm sure I'll get the hang of it! The alarm and markers are very simple to set...keep having to make sure I don't set the alarm while at work in the quiet office 😉

It's a very colourful monitor too! Mine's lime green and the lancets are multi coloured- I wasn't expecting that when I picked my perscription up 😛
