Hi All
Spent an interesting, tiring but productive day at Southampton Hospital seeing the Opthamologist for K.
Have a date for removal of her first cataract - May 15th😱
We have to go in the day before as they have to sort out what they are going to do re the diabetes and of course she won't be able to eat for several hours (it will be general anaesthetic). Spent hours being looked at by all and sundry as K is, of course, a medical oddity 🙄 plus eyes photographed measured etc etc. Glad K had her cane as at first she did get some strange looks sitting in the waiting room with the average age, apart from her was about 70. The other waiting room was average age about 3 years old!
Opthamologist was going to show me the exact type of cateracts that K has but her PC crashed but I hope she can show me when we go about second eye. I have googled the name I wrote down, but I can't find it so must have written it wrong. Thought I would post a report I found when K was first diagnosed - it was published in 1997 and recommends that all children should have an eye check on diagnosis to catch the cateracts asap - especially in children with symptoms for some time before Dx of diabetes. This still doesn't happen as far as I know - certainly I was told by Ks Paed. that permanent damage was very very unlikely and eye exam not necessary but I went ahead and got it done anyway. Her diabetes team very surprised at the outcome.
Of course if there wasn't delay in diagnosis of Diabetes (in Ks case 20 months from first trip to GP) the problem wouldn't arise as much or at all
