Hello @Aimeemc

So sorry to hear how difficult things are for you at the moment :(

Have you mentioned how much you are struggling to your clinic or DSN? It seems like you could really do with some extra support and maybe a referral to counselling?

Type 1 diabetes is associated with a significant increased risk of eating disorders (there are lots of types of disordered eating), and there are specialist support services which can help if you are affected.

In the meantime perhaps you could call the DUK helpline tomorrow for some immediate advice and support?

Hi @Aimeemc, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm really sorry to hear that you are struggling so much :( It sounds like you are trying really hard to get things under control, but could do with a helping hand to support you with a good solid plan.

Have you been diagnosed long? What sort of insulin do you use? Trying to use your insulin to help you with weight control won't work, I'm afraid, and it might actually be making things harder for you. You need to work on getting good blood sugar control as a first step to getting back on track, so try to concentrate on that for the time being - it can be easy to feel totally overwhelmed by everything at times and it sounds like you are in that place right now. One step at a time, contact your DSN and let her/him know how you are feeling and ask for an appointment so you can discuss a strategy. Getting good blood sugar control will also help your mood enormously - high or fluctuating levels can really bring you down.

Let us know a bit more about you so we can perhaps share our own experiences which may help you. You are not alone in feeling like this, I can assure you, and no-one here will judge you or dismiss your feelings - we are here to help {{{HUGS}}}

It would be really good if you could contact the Diabetes UK Helpline service, as suggested - they may be able to suggest things that will help you take back control of things and start to feel good about yourself again. Details are here:

Please ask us any questions you may have and we will do our best to help 🙂

I am on novorapid 3x day levomir. 2x I just feel so helpless
That's a good, flexible regime to be on Aimee 🙂 Have you ever been on a carb-counting course e.g. DAFNE? It can be helpful to meet others living with diabetes (I know this to be true as I've met loads at Forum Meets over the years 🙂 ) Nothing beats talking with others who 'get it', and if you can't get to meet people in 'real life' then this forum is a pretty good substitute 🙂

How long have you been feeling so down about things, if you don't mind me asking? You don't need to say if you don't want. Sometimes people feel this way in the early stages after diagnosis, but others can feel it after many years of being diagnosed.

From when I was diagnosed at age 11
Ah, you've had it a good few years then. We have quite a few members who have grown up with diabetes, so if you feel the need to share your own experiences over the years I'm sure you will get plenty of support from those who know just how things can be.

11 can be a particularly difficult age, I can imagine, with new schools and teenage years. Were there any other people with Type 1 at your school?

Hi @Aimeemc , welcome to the forum,🙂

I was diagnosed at about the same age as you and found it incredibly tough going through my teenage years then out the other side into my twenties and beyond.

Could you make an appointment to speak to your DSN, they have helped loads of people through tough times and will want to help you find a good way forward . As everydayupsanddowns says having Type 1 really can cause serious issues for us with the added focus on what and when we eat, how good our control is etc. It can all get too much but it isn't your fault and it isn't hopeless, there is good help out there. Coping with diabetes at the same time as growing up and becoming independent is a lot to manage. Ask your diabetes team to help you to inject the right amount of insulin for your needs and that will help you feel better and safer too. Having too much insulin floating around is not a good way to be as you then need to eat more to ward off hypos. It is a big ask to get everything balanced sometimes in life and we all do need input from medics and other professionals to help us to feel better and find a way through.

There are some excellent Young Persons diabetes clinics around at some of the hospitals so it may be worth asking if there is one near you where you can meet others facing the same/similar challenges.

Please do ask for help with getting your insulin amounts safe and sorted and that will help you to feel better and more in control. It is a tough thing to deal with but you aren't alone and things will improve, this forum is full of people who get what you're feeling so please let us know how things go. I wish you well 🙂

I am new to this and can't offer anything really except to say you are not as alone as you thought you were @Aimeemc. the good people that have replied already, know what it's about.. these are real people who have been there.. I wish I had something more to add other than I think you have found a good place ..
