This was prompted by Bigrednoob's thread, but I was thinking of posting this soon anyway

The Men's Sheds scheme was started in Australia, but there are now nearly 400 in Britain, and I am helping to get one started in Burnley, where I live

Basically they are sort of work or hobby clubs where men can get together and do practical things like woodwork, bicycle repair and so on
There are two aspects to this -

You get a bigger & better shed with more tools, usually including larger & more expensive things like bandsaws & pillar drills
You can share knowledge & experience. There will usually be a selection of carpenters, plumbers, engineers, and also people like accountants & managers who can help with things like form - filling
Or people who have hobbies like model making and wood carving

Men tend not to be very good at talking about problems, and often end up sitting at home staring at the walls or boozing, so this is a way of getting a load of ready made mates to chat and drink tea with and generally chivvy each other up

It tends to be retired men, but anyone who isn't working is welcome. And even if you have a job, if you're getting a bit fed up with your own company it would be worth taking a day or half a day off to see what goes on

In fact they're becoming so popular that a couple of towns have opened She Sheds!

BIGREDNOOB - there are 5 or 6 sheds in the Glasgow/Edinburgh area, have a look at the website to find the best one for you
