Hi Everyone. I am just a bit unsettled. I have been on Empagliflozin 10mg for several months, it was added to my twice daily metformin. The itching got worse and I had a check up with an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, between us we decided that I come off Empagliflozin, and the Diabetes nurse is ringing me on Monday to talk about what to do, I am anxious as today my usual readings of 7 - 7.2 are 9.3 as this morning was the first morning off it. I will test each day now and hopefully it won't go higher and be extra careful with what I eat.
I am surprised it was a sudden stop but I also wanted the symptoms to stop too.

Have you been given any treatment for thrush which is likely the cause of the itching due to the Empagliflozin removing excess glucose into your urine. If you haven't been given medication for the thrush, you can buy Canesten in pharmacies or large supermarkets to treat it. Usually a "combi pack" which is a pessary and cream.

What sort of things do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch and evening meal? Perhaps we can give you some lower carb suggestions to help you keep things in check over the weekend or until you get some alternative medication.

I was given a prescription for some cream to use. I took my empagliflizon this afternoon, i will speak with the diabetes nurse on monday re the meds change, and use the cream meanwhile. I am going to have the greek style yoghurt for breakfast as i have seen recommended on here and tried it, i have dropped porridge for now, i mostly have fresh chicken or salmon, and love salad and all veg so am not too bad. I do have bread but it is the small thin no added sugar and is 9g carbs per slice. I am ok on porridge usually but i am going to try and vary my breakfast choices and start the day with lower numbers.

Hope you get a little relief over the weekend, and that your appointment goes well on Monday.

Hope the tweaks to your menu begin to help too 🙂

When I was on a ‘flozin’ I had several bouts of thrush to the point of pain and being unable to walk. After coming off it the itching eased a little but never went away until I went low carb and got my glucose levels under control. I no longer have any itching. I think the itching is related to high levels of glucose in the body/urine which obviously the flozin drugs work to eradicate but the real culprit is excess glucose in the body.

my numbers are generally in the 7's, a few low 8's which the nurse's have been fine with, i was 12.2 when they put me on the "flozin"... it was only the 9 yesterday i think because i'd not took it, i took it this morning and am 7.2 as my normal... i never had itches ever before taking this med, the cream is doing wonders only on day 2....will see what the diabetes nurse says on monday.

Sometimes if it is thrush you may need the Combo treatment which is an oral med and the cream/pessary.
I remember reading that live yogurt was something that helps but I was never sure if you were supposed to eat it or apply it to the affected area.

Both! I used to try that, I always used to get thrush the week before my period. Dipping a tampon in live yogurt was the recommended method (for applying to the affected area, I mean, not eating it!)

they have given me Clobetasone, no mention of thrush. It literally was just the itching. and mad as it sounds second day using it and no itching.

@Myrtle_11 hope you are feeling better. I'm on an SGLT2 and was warned about thrush etc. I remember having a pain that might have been the start of thrush or a uti but I spent three days drinking sugar free cranberry juice and it disappeared.
I've had occasional minor itching but have hoped now my hba1c is 44 there is less sugar passing through.

Good luck

Thank you... i am having the yearly blood test done on tuesday so will see what result that brings, i am dreading it now lol

Carbs do confuse me, i stick with 130g per day and most days am seemingly fine (i do not test every day, i get too obsessive) but some days it doesn't quite make sense, i guess it is the science of the body, i did test 3 days in a row having had the exact same food/drink in exact same quantity and got differing numbers and got stressed and over obsessed so i hold back now quite a bit

Having been confirmed diabetic at end of July with my second blood test ( 64) I found the forum in August and things improved a bit. I've not seen a GP our surgery has other staff dealing with chronic conditions. I was surprised to be asked to book my annual diabetes review in Decenmber 5 months after diagnosis but it was just before my birthday and Christmas so got result of 44 before Christmas! I now need to take back control. I've eaten too many carbs partly because I'm on dapaglofozin which I'm told requires carbs and I've been eating too many extras. My reading went down despite lots of difficulties in between including septic finger, operation, steroids and bad cold. So be optimistic.

my weakness is fruit..i have diverticular disease and recently discovered a gathering of tiny gallstones causing issues, fruit and veg are my dailt go to's but i do have to watch it and i have over indulged def on the grapes, i have given up bananna's, i love avocado if i can find one in the right state lol

That is a moderate steroid cream rather than an antifungal preparation so obviously it is not thought to be thrush but more like eczema.

130g per day is just a starting point for the amount of carb but it is often more what your body can tolerate per meal but the body is a living system and expecting it to behave in exactly the same way each time is optimistic.
Were those test before you ate and after 2 hours each time?

Yes I have finally had the penny drop as they say, lowering my carb intake def makes a difference overall. I was testing before and after I think, I got obsessed '.
