Medication advice

Hi,
I have been pre diabetic for a couple of years and last December my bloods came back at 57, so was put on slow release metformin once a day.
I've tried really hard and followed all the great advice on here and after retesting last week my hbac1 was 37. Also in December my cholesterol was really high and is now 3.8.
My question is that after speaking to the diabetic nurse yesterday, she told me that I had to stay on the one a day metformin and 40mg of statins. Also for the first time ever, my liver function has come back out of range and I've got to be retested for it.
I am so confused and disappointed that I've tried so hard but as far as medication goes, it's made no difference.
Any advice appreciated
Thanks, Lydia

I'm sorry but as it says at the top of the page we are only permitted to share our own experiences and are not qualified to give medical advice.

Did your DN not give reasons for insisting that you stayed on Metformin and statins?

Shame that your liver function result has taken the shine off your great HbA1c and cholesterol reductions.

Hi @LydiaH and welcome!
Firstly, huge congratulations on all the hard work you’ve put in - bringing your HbA1c down from 57 to 37 and your cholesterol to 3.8 is an amazing achievement, you should absolutely feel proud of that! :star:
It’s completely understandable to feel disappointed and confused when, despite all that progress, you're still being told to stay on medication. Sometimes healthcare providers take a cautious approach, especially if there's a history of high results, or if they’re considering long-term risk management. The liver function result may also be influencing their thinking, especially if they’re unsure whether the meds or something else could be causing it.
You’ve every right to ask more questions or request a medication review, especially now that your numbers are in such a great range. You could ask whether it's possible to trial coming off Metformin or reducing the statin dose, with careful monitoring, and discuss the liver results more fully. It might help to ask your GP or nurse to explain their reasoning in detail so you feel more informed.
You're doing brilliantly - it might not feel like it now, but your efforts have made a big difference to your health and risk profile. I hope the liver results are nothing to worry about and that you get some clearer answers soon. Please keep us posted. <3
