My mum has gone on about getting this all morning. Yes I agree with her its a good idea, but I'm just thinking its a bit pre-mature, considering I haven't got a definate answer to which type of diabetes. Guess a bit of pre-thought won't go a miss

So do you guys carry one, and if so which type & why?
and where did you get it from?

If you want a pretty one then ice gems is a good place.

http://www.icegems.co.uk/

We use MedicAlert and pay ?25 ish per year. It is engraved on the back and has a code and phone number. If anything happens they ring the number, quote the code and MedicAlert have Jessica's details and regime and contact numbers etc etc.

We got it all printed on the back of the Ice gems bracelet as nicer than the MedicAlert at the time.

🙂

I've got Universal Medical ID - Gold, silver, steel and titanium medic id jewellery. Comes bundled with registration for own Online Medical Record system. Custom engraveable,

I preferred this one because it wasn't as expensive as Ice-Gems but still looked fairly nice - I've got a titanium dog tag.

from putting this question myself a little while back I also had suggestions for:

ICE Gems - Gold, Silver and steel medic alert jewellery. Watches, necklaces, dog tags, bracelets - a tad expensive! Custom engraveable,

The ID Band Company - mostly silver medic id bracelets. Custom engraveable,

MedicAlert - Gold, Silver and Steel Medic Alert Jewellery. Necklaces, charm bracelets. Is the NHS preferred supplier, but the online medical records database is ?25 per year.

Also I'm using a uCardit Diabetes card - a plastic credit card sized identity card with fully customisable text.

I have a card in my kit, one in my purse and a screen on my moby, all of which give my basic Diabetic details and tell folk who to contact for further information.

I also have a couple of ICE numbers (In Case of Emergency set up on my moby). One for my useless little bother and one to my chum who knows what's what.

I'd leave it for a few more weeks / months, until you know what type and what treatment eg type 1 diabetes on insulin or type 2 diabetes on tablets / insulin etc is more helpful that just "diabetes".

But I don't bother carrying ID, just make sure my insulin & blood testing kit are easy to find in rucksack pockets, sweets in clothing pockets etc. I have never worn any jewelry apart from a watch, so didn't want to start when I got diagnosed aged 30 years.

I do have ICE home and ICE parents on my mobile phone - as should everyone, regardless of diabetes.

My mum is starting to go into her "normal" panic mode, which she goes into when things happen (even with both sister's going into labour" ), but I've asked the question which has helped calm her down slightly

I'm quiet happy leaving things till I know more, then read up like hell, then start to panic 🙂

I've never heard of "ICE" being used on phones, though its a great tip

Break The Chain has a bit of information on ICE. I've got two ICE numbers on my mobile -- "next of kin" (my elder sister) and "friend" (the guy who lives next door, whom I've known about 20 years).

I have a necklace and a bracelet (for work that one) with Type 1 insulin dependant diabetic on a pump on it and 2 contact numbers as well as like MarkT a credit card size card with details on it. But it is best to have anything available as medics first look around your neck or wrists for tags (whether diabetic or not) first to check anything and then pockets/bags etc with you. But be careful as best to have contacts people can ring first to see what do to do as there is so many people out there clueless on diabetes and you don't want a mix up.

I have a bracelet and pendant from ICE Gems which look great. The engraving is very good and on the bracelet I have;

Name D.O.B
Type 1 Diabetic
Insulin Dependent
ICE: Name Number

And then on the pendant I have the same, as well as my NHS number on it. May find ICE Gems expensive, but I think you get what you pay for - very nice and wearable jewellery as well as your Medical ID 🙂

I also have a Diabetes UK ID Card in my wallet and a couple of ICE contacts on my mobile phone, which is a great idea.

I have a dog tag but I don't wear it any more. I've not got around to getting anything more up to date. I do wear the dog tag from time to time. If only to cover myself when I'm out on my tod. I suppose I'm just out of the habit.

I wear a bracelet as it is immediately visible if I'm ever that unlucky. I also have a medic alert pendant with the code number on it and diabetes and hypertension. With your personal number you get the chance to up date it when you need to and for peace of mind I think it is worth ?25 a year.

This has just reminded me to order something!!

JDRF also do wallet cards, with a section for you to complete on your hypo symptoms, where you keep hypo supplies and what to do if x happens, etc.

I wear a MediTag around my neck and also carry a card in my wallet that says I'm using insulin and what to do in an emergency.
