hi just been looking at this , suffering with hypo unawareness I think it's time I invested in something more than just a card and keyring , can anyone recommend this ? I know you buy the jewellery and become a member and then all your details go on a database , have any of you got this and has anyone had the need to use the service you sign up for and how did they do , thanks

I did have stuff from them but I needed to change details a couple of times, important things like my medication changes and someone to contact. It was almost as expensive to change my details as it was to register in the first place.

Although it just says diabetes I do wear a bracelet with the medical symbol on it

I have a Talisman necklace which I wear all the time. Easy to update info inside the locket and no annual charge. As I am allergic to base metals hubby bought me the titanium version and I have had no reaction to it. Available from most chemists - got mine in Boots.

Got a bracelet from Unimeddata.com in the States via ebay. It has my info on a 'card' and a v slim usb stick, on which I've out all my info which I can update as needed. Came within a fortnight!

Universal Medical is still free for the online record (engraved on your bracelet, etc) if you buy a bracelet, necklace etc, and a stainless steel one is only ?20.99.

see: http://www.universalmedicalid.co.uk/
This service is free for life with the purchase of any medical ID.

There have been lots of posts on this topic, do a search for 'Bracelet' on this forum if you want.

Still looking for one for son.

Dog tags possibly. Will look over Xmas and post anything I find 🙂

I got my bracelet from them and I'd recommend them, very reasonable price and quick. They do a range that have silicone bands loads of different colours, dog tags, kids stuff etc. I need to get another really because I've developed an allergic reaction to the band (happens when to me when the silicone starts to break down so not their fault), I'm just very picky about what I wear jewellery wise, mostly because I'm allergic to lots of finishes on stuff. They do precious metal as well, although not really to my taste. I actually considered a tattoo for a while because my ICE info is in my phone/bag, but I'm not really a tattoo kind of a gal. I might look at standard ID bracelets in the new year.

Oh yes! You have just reminded me - a couple of type 1's in the college where I used to work wore dog tags - uber cool!

One thing you can consider doing if you have a smartphone is to use a photoeditor to add some text over an image for the lock screen of your phone. That way if anyone finds you unconscious and looks for contact details they can see your conditions/hypo instructions etc.

I have a small, very simple band from StickyJ in the US (looks a bit like a surf wristband) which just reads 'T1 Diabetes' worn on right hand wrist. There's an SOS Talisman on my keys but I would not expect anyone to bother faffing about with opening that up.

I made a jpeg and use it as the lock screen on my mobile. It's already worked as the ambulance folk went straight for the phone last time I was rescued - even though my brother was telling them what was wrong. Not that they didn't believe him, but they've learned that folk often have details on the phone about what medications they're using and it's often the first place they check now.

Actually, it needs updating again. Sigh

If you have an iPhone with iOS 8 or later there is a medic alert option you can use - quite useful.

Used to be with one of them, it was ok as long as your meds are constant or you only needed to change details a couple of times a year. After that it was £10 a time and the way my meds keep changing it was not a viable option.

My Dad bought me one of the SOS Talismans when I was first diagnosed. I did wear it for a while and have still got it but haven't worn it for about 25 years as I found it a bit of a faff having it around my neck. It was also a pain changing details on the paper strip. I was also given a credit card size alert card (I think they were produced by Novo) displaying personal details and medical details to be kept in a wallet/credit card holder. Again, changing details all the time caused the card to become unreadable after a bit.

I'm the same as AlisonM now, my details are on my phone - I'll just have to make sure I always have it with me and it's always charged. 😉

My dad bought me an SOS Talisman when I was diagnosed in 1989. Hated wearing it. Still have it in a drawer somewhere.
