Ignore most of whatthe papers say about diabetes. We don't always get it right here but we are better informed.

I am type 2, and don't blame myself, I blame my genes. My father is type 2 and one of my uncles. I suspect more in the family had it and went undiagnosed.

i agree with caroline never ever believe wat you read in the papers! unless one of their editors is diabetic they have no clue and also if someone was they can't have both types 🙂 dont blame yourself for your diabetes it's mother nature's nephew - genes!

Hi Grogans.

I've never really paid any attention to the media view of diabetes nor to what other people say to me. I just smile and nod while I think how ignorant they are, or explain why they're wrong.

I certainly wouldn't assume that everyone else is judging me.

How has your care been going ?

I seem to remember you were struggling to get any medical advice. I hope things have improved for you.🙂

...was they can't have both types...
Actually, I believe that it is possible to be both - there are cases of Type 1's with Insulin resistance (which is the hallmark of Type 2) 😱

But that's still not their fault either :D Most papers only write whatever it takes to sell them regardless of whether it is true or not.

yes paper write what is sensational and easy only to sell but it does take a toll on all of us type 1 and 2 and is not wright!!!!😡

oh yeah oops :S i knew that just i got a bad memory hehe:D papers make stuff up all the time

newspapers should stick at what they're a bit better at - celebrities and models and x factor - and keep their noses out of diabetes! press about diabetes is good i guess to raise awareness but not if they give wrong details or give diabetes a bad name..

I was thinking about the media Misrepresentation of Diabeties yesterdAy, after all the articles about Amelia on X factor.

Could Diabeties Uk not use some of their budget to improve the image of Diabetes? I have noticed that 'movember' is getting a lot of publicity for mens health, and that is great, but were is the gimmic to promote Diabetes month? Where is the lapel badge and collection tin in the high street? This kind of thing would have several good effects such as raising awareness, raising funds and helping people in the Diabetes community not feel so isolated and blamed for their problems. I really think DUK need to take a more active role in promoting awareness and understanding (although I know that do a lot already)

I am very sorry grogans that you are feeling down, it is certainly not your fault so try not to let ignorant articles in the press get you down. Easy to say, not so easy to do, I know :(

Shining blue light onto various buildings and structures for diabetes doesn't seem to equate to the level of recognition for eg Movember for testicular and prostate cancers or pink for breast cancer or red ribbons for HIV / AIDS.

I think Diabetes UK do more promotion of Diabetes Week, around June time (I think I was diagnosed in Diabetes Week!). Diabetes Month/November certainly seems much bigger in the US.

If I weren't diabetic, I don't think I'd be any the wiser for DUK's efforts.

I've often wondered why they sit back as they do. JDRF seem to do more for awareness but their budget must be very limited in comparison.

A ribbon or wristband (as was the vogue a while ago) would go a long way just to get people talking.
