Med Diet

Hi,
Could anybody offer me some advice about the Med Diet and its content?
After following Dr. Mosley's 800 carb diet for the last three months, I have lost TOO much weight so now have to abandon that diet and go on to the Med diet BUT when I downloaded said diet from DUK, I've noticed that they include pasta, bread, puddings (practically every night) and other various foods which I thought I couldn't eat.
Is it ok to eat wholemeal pasta, wholemeal bread ( made at home with flour bought from health shop) and wholemeal rice?
This is all still very new to me and to be honest, it scares me to branch out and include food I thought were off limit.
I am seeing the hospital dietician next week and intended to ask her what I should eat, but reading some of the comments, it would seem that they don't know the answers either!
Any help, advice would be appreciated.
My Hb is 50 and mmol/is usually between 5.4 and anything up to 6.5 after food etc.
I take one Metformin daily and am awaiting the results of a three monthly blood test next week.

Hi Flora.🙂 Those BG readings sound excellent to me. As for eating wholemeal bread, pasta etc, only your meter can tell you whether they are ok or not. For me, they are all a big no no, especially pasta which sends me into double figures, wholemeal or not. My diet is largely med, but without the carbs. Even in med countries, people are starting to cut back on the pasta as Type 2 is becoming more prevalent in these countries (particularly Italy).
 
I cant help with the diet you are asking about as I've never read up about it, as a diabetic there aren't any foods that are strictly off limits, a healthy balanced diet is just as important to us as any other old joe, we tend to watch carbs but that doesn't mean you CANT have them if you want them, what do you eat? There are lower carb breads available, Burgen, Tesco High Protein and Hovis Lower Carb to name a few, you already mention you post meal test so why not try some of the foods you've mentioned and see what effect they have? If it's not a great result then don't worry about it, you don't have to then write that food off completely, next time you could try the same portion size of the carby food but add more fat and protein to the meal or you could reduce the portion size of the carby food xx
 
You mean the Mediterranean diet?
You need to be sure that is what you are looking at - the original version as described as a healthy one did not have bread and pasta in the amounts introduced in the recent past, and I am not sure that it is at all a good idea for a diabetic.
The LCHF diet can be followed to maintain weight - at least in the Atkins version it can. so perhaps downloading the latest version of New Diet Revolution you can find online would help - it is certainly possible to maintain normal blood glucose numbers on unrestricted calories, just eating low carb.
 
Many thanks to all of you for your replies. I'll take a look at the Atkins Diet and look up the New Diet Revolution next. Thank you also for the info on breads. The wholemeal bread that I made yesterday, after three months without any, tasted like nectar and I savoured every crumb 🙂
I will also try eating aforementioned foods again and BS testing afterwards to see what happens.
It's strange that when I ask the Doctor about testing when I was first diagnosed, she was adamant that the Metformin would do the job and I didn't need to test, but from all the advice and stories that I have read on the Forum, it would seem imperative that I keep a close watch on the food that might not agree. I am seeing her tomorrow to receive the results of my blood test and I'll ask her again about the value of testing.

Hello again,
Could I ask that if, like some of you write, my/your Diabetes were to be / is now 'resolved', does that mean that you now do not have diabetes and are off the register, or just that it is in abeyance and being controlled constantly by diet? Also, in that circumstance, would you drink a glass of wine or beer in the week?

Hi @Flora Peach Sadly, what your doctor told you is quite common, many haven't got a clue. I wouldn't hold out much hope on asking again. If they are not up to date on the latest research they will be giving bad advice. I am lucky that my GP has prescribed me a meter and continues to prescribe strips. I managed to bring my levels down to a pre diabetic range but I still have to continue the LCHF way of eating. As far as I know, diabetes never goes away, but it can be controlled with diet and exercise. And to answer your question about wine, yes, I enjoy a glass of red wine most days with my evening meal 😉

Thank you Jeandp, I have bought myself a meter now and intend to use it as my next best friend !. Perhaps I will bin the idea of mentioning the testing and just carry on quietly doing it.
Great news about the wine. I did drink white wine before but perhaps red is better? Haven't had any for months as too scared about the results, but it would be nice to sip a drink along with my family instead of soda water with ice and a squirt of lemon juice 🙂

My DSN described my good control as 'resolved' as I had 3 HbA1c tests in a row that were below diabetic range. I now don't have to see her at all now, but still have an annual blood test & eye check as well. I still have diabetes and always will have, just very good control by watching my carbs.🙂
 
Hi Flora. I prefer red wine. I find that even dry white wine tastes a bit sweet to me. I buy the wine boxes, either Shiraz or Merlot, and I have it half and half with sparkling water. You should be OK though with dry white wine if that is your preference. A cheeky gin and slimline tonic is not too bad either. You will need to test though to be sure it is OK for you. Don't let me lead you astray 😉o_O
