Hi, I was just wondering I never had the Measles vaccination when i was little and now with everything that's going on at the mim i think maybe I should. Iam 20 and type 1 would having the jab do anything to my blood sugars?
Thanksxxxx

Hi Rosie, I'm really not sure - possibly like a lot of other things it might raise your levels a little for a couple of days. I would ask your GP as they should know, or perhaps some of the parents here will know how it affected their children who already have T1?

Hey Thanks🙂 I would ask my GP but they are really useless when it come too type 1 so i don?t think they would know if i asked lol but it looks like I?ll have to give it a go maybe.

The MMR vaccine contains three live (weakened) viruses, so there is a chance of very mild symptoms. The advice given to parents is to give calpol (paracetamol) if necessary. My son had the mumps, rubella and measles vaccines separately because it was at the height of the controversy over MMR and autism. He developed type 1 3 weeks after his 2nd measles vaccination, which I believe was the final trigger (any virus would have done it, just a matter of time), so I can't tell you how it affected his levels!

But do get yourself vaccinated, as it's a nasty illness and would really affect your diabetes control if you caught it. My Grandma had measles as a child and her ear-drums were irreparably damaged, leading to permanent deafness.

Hi Rosie,
the vaccine would do less damage to your blood sugars than a dose of measles 🙂

Hmmm i think i will, like you said it no worth the risk really thanks for you help🙂

Hi Rosie,

My daughter was T1 when she had her 2nd MMR booster and didn't notice any significant impact on the BG's. Like Sue says the vaccine would have less impact than contracting measles so I went with that stance for it. 🙂

Hi,
I recently had to have a MMR vaccine as my measles antibodies were low and I need it for work. I have never had a problem with vaccines before (flu one every year, hep B, all the holiday ones, yellow fever etc) but the MMR kicked my ass for nearly 2 weeks! After a few days I had high temperatures, severe joint pain especially in my hands and arms, a measles type rash all over my upper body and abdomen, swollen face. I googled the vaccine and I think I ticked most of the side effect boxes. Maybe it's because I already had some immunity, maybe it's just luck of the draw but I felt so poorly.

However.... it's probably less than if I actually caught measles, and I would always advocate immunisation but just be warned although most people have no side effects some do and it's very unpleasant! Maybe plan a quiet week after you get it just on the safe side

Definitely agree - my bro managed to get measles even with having the vaccine and is now completely deaf in 1 ear... I'd get vaccinated if I were you. I find any vaccination raises my BGs for a day or two but then they go back to normal, when there was such a thing - they're just completely erratic at the moment!

Xx
