Meal plans

Are the meal plans from Diabetes UK designed to avoid food waste? Recipes generally have ingredients like half a teaspoonful of foobar, but foobar is not sold by the half-teaspoonful. I would be looking for a plan designed to use up perishables I have to buy (also one not aimed at weight loss).

Welcome @jrs2 🙂 If I recipe calls for something I don’t have or that’s expensive I often substitute it with something else. Is there any particular ingredient that you’d prefer not to buy specially?

I am sure choosing a substitute is something an experienced cook would be able to do.

Google can help too. I’ve googled ‘substitute for X’ and got some helpful suggestions. I get your concern about reducing food waste. I wonder if this is something that Diabetes U.K. has considered? I’ll tag @everydayupsanddowns in case he knows.

Part of the problem, i find, is that supermarkets aim things at large families and the pack sizes are often unhelpful. I’m sure it was easier to buy small amounts of things some years ago.

Another thought @jrs2 - you could intersperse the Meal Plan with some of your own meals if you have things to use up, eg fresh veg. So, say you had a chicken breast and a courgette left over, along with some herbs, you could simply cook up the chicken and courgette to use it up, then return to a meal from the Meal Plan the next day. That way, you wouldn’t have various items building up. You could also double the quantities in the meal and freeze the spare portions if suitable for freezing.

Although not diabetes focused, I know the Sorted food sidekick app includes things like weekly shops that contain ingredients you can use in multiple meals.
I am sure there are others like that available.

As for herbs and spices which may only use a tea spoon or two in a dish, I find I get used to the flavours and learn to use them in other things.
For example, basil goes well with anything with tomatoes in, taragon goes with chicken and/or mushrooms.
