Hi all,
I am very keen to get Alex on a CGM machine - but our DN has told us that she doesnt have access to one - so i have spoken to BUPA as a last resort and they are looking into it for me! They said as long as his consultant thinks that it will be of benefit to his long term health then its a possibility! I am so pleased - we may even find out if he is hypoing during the night - i have tested through the night but never 'caught' one - but sometimes he looks 'hungover' in the morning so i am wondering if he is having them. I will let you know what happens....:D Bev

Hope that you can get one, it is very interesting to see the results, as I have said before when I used one it proved that I wasn't having overnight hypos which was suspected.
I'm surprised that your DN doesn't have access, i thought every hospital clinic had one. Are many people on pumps in your area do you know?

Well there must be a few on pumps because they have just taken on a new consultant to work directly with children on them! Alex's consultant will remain with MDI paediatrics, whilst the new chap will work directly with the pumpers! I do suspect that they have one - but they are in so much demand that i doubt they want us to have one - thats why i decided to go down the BUPA road! Anything is worth a try if you can get good control isnt it?🙂 Bev

Hi Bev

This is taken from the NICE guidelines :

Children and young people with type 1 diabetes who have persistent problems with
hypoglycaemia unawareness or repeated hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia should
be offered continuous glucose monitoring systems.

If they don't have one, which I suspect they do, contact the PCT to ask why the hospital don't have one and is there funding available to buy one.

Hi Adrienne,

I think they do as another mum on the childrens forum has the same team and she said she knows they have one for teenagers! I have left a message with the DN on her answering machine - so hopefully she will ring me tomorrow and either 'find' a cgm to use or agree to BUPA funding it! ( i hope anyway!). It is awful that we have to almost 'beg' for something that is there to 'help' in the gaining of better control isnt it? Bev
