This has taken me a long time to post, but after an evening out with a super supportive friend I am going for it!

I was diagnosed with diabetes last year, aged 33 after being taken to hospital with a racing heart.

After 6 months of appointments and tests it turns out I am type 2. Apparently I don't 'look' type 2 and this is where I really want support.

I really do not want or mean to discriminate anyone but I need to build a support group round me of people in a similar situation to motivate myself.

I am 33, type 2 on 2000mg metformin and I'm still showing 8-11mmol fasting. I'm a size 12 (ironically have put on a bit of weight since the docs out me on gliclazide 1st) and used to be very active. If you look at me I'm not overweight and so many people keep telling me I have nothing to worry about so I am struggling with dieting But I do! I want children and I want to live as long as possible.

Are there any diabetics out there in a similar position? Who don't seem overweight, but still need to change their diet/lifestyle and struggling with support because friends keep telling you you have nothing to worry about!! I went vegan, Gf last summer which is mocked loads but my HBA1C dropped to 54 with no meds!!

Basically I need a support group of people in a similar position. Can we get together and help each other? All the official groups seem to be older or overweight type 2 (gosh I'm so sorry if I sound like a dick ☹️) or young type 1's.

Manchester based! Desperate for some support !

Hello Mandy

We have all sorts of members, of all shapes and sizes - typical and atypical for lots of different types of diabetes - type 1, type 2, LADA (slow onset type 1), MODY, type 3c and other niche types, along with partners, parents and carers.

One of the strengths of the forum, I think, is that we can all support and help each other and we have much we can learn from those in similar and quite different positions to ourselves.

Hope you find the support you seek here.

I myself am type one but my gp recently said I might be type 2 as I get a lot of hypos so he thinks the insulin might be overworking on me but I don't buy that as I was diagnosed at 18 and now am 31 and I am thin am so use to type one that I don't want to now be a type 2

Hi Mandy from a fellow T2 (overweight). We can be dismissed with a "You're fine!" too, by health care professionals even.
Hopefully we can muddle through together.

Hi @Mandy1984 and welcome to the forum. I'm in Cheshire so not too far from you.
As Mike says, we come in all shapes, sizes and types but unfortunately the media focus on T2 being because people are overweight and unhealthy which is not necessarily the case.
We all support and learn from each other on here and it is invaluable to be able to speak to people who just 'get' what you are going through.
Any questions just fire away, or if you want a rant about something just let rip :D, someone will be along to help. 🙂

Hi I'm not in your area or type 2, but I was diagnosed in my early thirties and the nurse and doc never really beloved I could have it as I wasn't text book, well most of us aren't! I hope you get some good advice here and the support you're after.

Rossi.
