We are off to Florida on holiday and I have never been able to find lucozade there. As my husband takes night time hypos this is a really key bit of kit for us. Does anyone know of a drink which will do the same as quick as it?

Thanks 🙂

Hi Drouthy, welcome to the forum 🙂 I believe it's called Gatorade over there, but any full sugar soft drink will work e.g. ordinary coke/cola etc.

Welcome to the boards, Drouthy.

I guess it's a question of looking at nutritional information on bottles to find a comparable full sugar drink in USA. Probably better to avoid caffeine containing drinks, such as cola, overnight.

It's glucose content you should be looking for, not sugar. Following the 'The men who made us fat' program on BBC2 the USA is flooded with fructose syrup in their drinks (coke, pepsi). don't know if that is as rapid as glucose (don;t think so). Gatorade (be careful which one) is only 6% glucose, lucozade is 24%. Some of the Gatorades are maltodextrin, dextrose.
I am sure you will find something in the larger supermarkets or pharmacies.

I wondered about that. That gives me better idea of what to look for. Coke etc just don't give the speed of recovery that you get with lucozade.

Thank you 🙂

Just a suggestion, why not take Dextrose tablets or Glucotabs?

Lucozade do tablets. (or are they Glucotabs?)

My prob is though, the more hypo I am the less I can chew or swallow. So the first gulp goes glug to make sure of it - then I swill the rest round my mouth/hold it in my mouth a bit more leisurely before swallowing - the inside of your cheeks are very good indeed at absorbing glucose.

The tabs are great if more aware, but he tends to spit them out as some inbuilt feeling that he shouldn't take them? Lucozade seems more acceptable:confused:

You may struggle for Lucozade in the States due to some of the E numbers that it contains being banned over there. Possibly contact GlaxoSmithKline (manufacturer) to see if they can offer any guidance.

Didn't think about e numbers! Thanks to all for your help. What a great introduction to the board with such great help 🙂
