Hi! I am curious about your go-to meals when you have an upset stomach and don't feel like eating much.

I was thinking about the kind of foods my parents would give me in that scenario when I was younger: white rice, white bread, boiled potatoes... Not the most diabetes-friendly stuff. So I was wondering, those of you who eat low carb, do you have any low carb option for those days? Or you skip the low carb on such occasions?

I am not really looking for advice with that, just a question that popped to my mind 🙂

I believe people taking insulin will have 'sick day' rules which may help you decide what foods you can have. It may rather depend on the reason for the upset stomach.

Well you don't actually have to eat - nobody does for 24/36 hrs - and the main thing about diabetes sick day rules whatever 'type' you have is to test every 2 hours, jab as often if you need to and ensure you drink enough. BG goes higher when we're ill, so not much chance of going hypo! If there's pain and/or inflammation, we can need multiples of the amount of insulin we normally need anyway.

Fasting is the best way to deal with it - eating anything with carbs is the worst option as the carbs are as likely to feed the problem as to feed you.

i just have toast when i feel ill, if youre not feeling well you only eat small amounts anyway

I assume you are answering as someone with type 2. @Elenka_HM has Type 1 so I am not sure your answer is appropriate.
I see no reason why, to go low carb because you have an upset stomach. As others have said, you don’t have to eat but we have sick day rules to manage the blood glucose iregularpities.

Why?
Did your parents starve you if you were ill?
Dry toast, dry crackers, always the go to.
The worst option was any sort of fat, anything greasy was a complete no no.
Or did they feed you that?

I've never come to any harm whatsoever, whenever and for whatever reason I haven't actually eaten for a day or a bit longer. Obviously I continue to have my basal insulin and equally obviously I don't have any bolus for food, except correction doses should I happen to need it.

Chicken soup or broth would be my go to or scrambled eggs. I can't remember my parents giving me white carbs when I was ill, but maybe they did and I was just too sick to take notice.

In answer to your question, as someone who follows a low carb way of eating I see no reason why I would change that because I was ill and in fact since my BG levels would be high with the illness I would be far less likely to eat carbs. I would drink water and maybe a cup of tea or warm milky water and keep injecting insulin to bring it down.

If I'm keeping hot drinks with a splosh of milk in them down OK on day 2 or 3, my go to would probably risk a biscuit (do they still do arrowroot biscuits?) with a cuppa and see how that went.

I don't think I was ever ill with anything when at home - other than tonsillitis once. Certainly never an upset stomach.
The fasting advice was from my GP in Portsmouth when there was an outbreak of Winter vomiting at the college.
How's your weight loss going?

No - not low carb - fasting. Advice from a GP when there was winter vomiting bug skittling the students where I worked. There were some type ones I think - but I can't remember now if they were already hit with it or still standing.

Very well thanks, got to the slow stage now, but one and a half stone down.

Thanks for your replies! 🙂

I meant more what people who are usually in low carb would do, as the options that came to my mind were all in the lines of toast, plain rice, etc...I was curious if they also go for that, or find other options.

Oh, that's a classic too. So comforting! It's a shame I can't get my mum's soup though, I'm a nostalgic (and she's a great cook) but it's not something easy to get via Royal Mail :D

Mum always give us chicken soup, that was for all types of sickness, swore by it. Also white toast toasted well was another go to, when feeling better with stomach upset it was scrambled eggs like rebrassco mentions, just eggs & salt with no milk cheese so not to upset things.

Strange when kids were little always did same never did them any harm, they always asked for chicken soup expect they'll do same with own children.

Chicken broth or consomme. Plenty of fluids?

My go to food when I have stomach problems (which is often because I have Crohn's disease and SIBO) Is plain porridge. I just use raw oatmeal, mix it with water, and cook in the microwave. I believe it is fairly low carb (the good kind), but I am sure someone more knowledgeable will comment on that.

Best wishes 🙂

Porridge is pretty carby but when you have an upset stomach and are eating really small quantities, anything fits into a low carb diet pretty much. Only thing is that someone who low carbs might not keep porridge in the house.
