after doing the DAFNE course i thought i had a good grasp of carbs and such.
i woke up yesterday with a BM of a respectable 6 i had two cups of tea with light soya milk and nothing else. Two hours later my Bm was 14? I have been finding this alot when eating foods with no carbs my MBs are still shooting up? I have tried uping my background insulin by two but all this does is make me hypo during the night?
Why is this happening:confused:?
 
Sounds like Dawn Phenomenon. Basically, if you don't eat in the mornings then your liver may decide to release its stores of glucose into your blood. I find I have to eat a slice of toast and inject a not-inconsiderable amount if insulin for it if I want to maintain a good level - eating something can 'switch off' the liver's action, but you may also experience a higher degree of insulin resistance in the morning. Some people can solve the problem with a no-carb/protein only breakfast, but it doesn't work for me.
 
If its happening at breakfast time, it sounds like Dawn Phenomenon to me. Part of the body's natural rhythm to prepare for the day. Fine if you have a functioning pancreas, but a bit tricky if you are doing it yourself!

Some people find a fat/protein snack before bed helps, others need a mini-bolus to cover the rise on getting out of bed (whether or not they eat anything), still others find the liver stops kicking out the glucose if they eat soon after rising.

It's probably a combo of dawn phenomenon and starvation response.

If you don't eat when your body needs energy, your liver will pump out glucose. A dash of milk in a couple of cups of tea isn't enough energy. If you'd eaten something (like scrambled egg), you would have probably seen far less of a rise overall. Although if dawn phenomenon is present, you would still see a rise. Plus, some people do need to bolus for protein.
 
I'm a low carber . I bolus for 30 - 50 g of carbs per day ( mostly vegetables)
9 - 12 units of Novorapid.

Even if I skip my breakfast I have to bolus at least 3 units .
