Hi all, have you any suggestions on low carb breakfasts for me,,,getting an online shop later and want to get the right stuff in...its normally toast or cereal,,,,and really want to try the low carb way as i dont feel too brilliant after eating cereal or toast...did think of porridge in morning....but my mind has gone blank on anything else so any suggestions would be brilliant thanks..🙂

Hi Moonymama

Bacon and eggs! With mushrooms if you like. Or I believe natural yogurt containing berries is a good alternative.

Porridge contains lots of carbs and can be a real pain to deal with even when you are on insulin, so I would avoid that.

Porridge definitely isn't low carb!

Low-carb will mean proteins and in particular, high fat. Eggs are the usual staple of a low-carb breakfast.

Generally, you'll be looking at things like:

Bacon
Cheese
Ham
Chorizo
Veggies

All of which can be chucked in an omelette or served with scrambled/poached/fried eggs.

You can also look at things like Greek yogurt (gotta be Greek, unsweetened) with small bits of fruit in (frozen berries often work well). Not strictly 'low-carb', but certainly lower in carbs than cereal, toast and porridge.

If you can eat eggs (I'm allergic) then an omelette with some veggies in perhaps. I make my own yoghurt and have that with berries or a few nuts. And sometimes I have a grill up with bacon, toms, mushrooms and sausages. You have to be careful of the bangers though as most of the supermarket ones contain fairly large amounts of rusk. I get mine from a local butcher.

If you just have to have your toast sometimes (I know I do) then stick to a wholegrain bread or try the Burgen bread many of our members like.

The Lidl's low fat greek style yougurt is lovely - 4.5g carbs per 100g. That with a handful of berries and a sprinkling of nuts on top is very nice.

Hi I like a big spoon of spinach with a poached egg on top or some grilled bacon with fried mushrooms and poached egg or omelette with cheese and tomato

Also, don't be afraid to do things a little different. There's no reason why you can't eat non-breakfast foods for breakfast. For instance, you could even have things like salad or steak as your first meal of the day. I also often have things like pork rinds or biltong to start my morning.

Oh Laura - HALF of Eggs Benedict !

That did make me laugh !

Not many places here offer that any more - in Aus it's as common as a bacon sandwich.
