Hi there, I’m new to the forum and have joined to try and educate myself and my new partner who was diagnosed T2, insulin dependent, 4 years ago. Unfortunately his diet has not been the greatest, nor has he been checking his blood sugars as he should have been. Despite a nursing background, I feel extremely ignorant as to what his diet should be so I’ve a lot of reading to do and will probably have a lot of questions to post on here over the coming weeks and months Thanks for reading

Welcome to the forum
Have a look at the Learning Zone for some general information for Type 2 folk
What diet he needs to follow very much depends on what insulin regime he is on and everybody manages their diabetes in different ways because of that.
Does he adjust his insulin according to how much carbohydrate he had for meals or is he on fixed doses.
Do you know the circumstances as to why he needs insulin and is he on any other medications as that will make a difference to the advice people will give you. Are his blood glucose levels stable with the regime he is on.

Welcome @Marsbar21 🙂 What insulin(s) does he take and when? Is he overweight? On other meds? If you can give a little more information, you’ll get more tailored replies.

Does he not check his blood sugar at all? He needs to if he’s on insulin and if he’s a driver then he’s invalidating his insurance and risking losing his licence if he doesn’t test when he needs to.

Welcome to the forum @Marsbar21

Sorry to hear about your partner’s diagnosis, but lovely to know that you want to be able to help and support them.

The learning zone that has already been mentioned is a great resource, and of course you can directly ask any questions or share any worries and concerns you have by posting them on the forum.

Sometimes it can be tricky to know how to have open and supportive conversations about health worries without feeling like you are interfering or ‘nagging’.

This etiquette guide has some helpful suggestions on how to get started, and things to watch out for.
