Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi my names Beth, I'm just looking for a bit of advice. I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (on Christmas eve) my A1C was 9.7% I have started metformin. I have all of the classic symptoms of diabetes. I have been avoiding excess sugar since diagnosis. I am struggling so much with all the symptoms and they don't show any sign of getting any better. The one I'm struggling with alot is having to pee so often. I can't even go to the shops without bursting for a wee every 30min-hour.(sometimes less). I'm also feeling so dehydrated all the time, no matter how much I drink. Im feeling so overwhelmed by it and really struggling, I'm not sure what to do. I'm hoping it will go away soon? Any advise is welcomed.

You mention avoiding excess sugar but have you reduced your carbohydrates? Total carbohydrate is the issue not just sugar as all carbohydrates turn into glucose in the body so if your still eating things like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, cereals etc then your blood sugars may be rising giving you all these symptoms but unless you have a BG monitor you wouldn't know xx

Yes been avoiding carbs as well. The diabetic nurse suggested having at least half a plate of veggies a fist of protein and a palm of carbs but only natural/wholegrain carbs and that's what I've been sticking to. I have a BG testong kit coming in the post but It isn't going to be here until 6th Jan.

They can only suggest I'm afraid and many find the eat well plate doesn't work for them, although better for you your body doesn't care what colour your food is and many find they can't tolerate wholegrain versions either but again you won't know until you get your meter, until then I'd possibly try and limit how much carb heavy things you consume and see if the constant loo needing eases any, your body is trying to flush out the sugar meaning your BG is quite high and adding further carbs will just make it worse xx

As already suggested to you in another post Beth, it sound as if you have type 1 diabetes rather than type 2.
Please get on to your GP ASP or go to A&E before you end up very seriously ill.

I'm even more convinced you're Type 1 Beth now I've heard about the raging thirst and desperation for the loo.

Hi @Beth123
You were only diagnosed a few days ago and it will take time for your diet changes and any changes to your exercise to start making an effect.
So if you have the same symptoms now as before diagnosis it may take a while to see improvement.
However if the symptoms are getting worse and they DO sound severe, as others are suggesting, make a phone call to your GP or diabetic nurse and run your symptoms past them again.
Re carb and sugar reduction bear in mind just about everything normally drunk contains sugar except water... sadly..
I'm sure things will work out in time...just awful timing to be diagnosed now.
Good luck. Nick

You are having a solidly full of starch serving of carbohydrate, even it it is wholegrain, and as you seen to be quite unwell, I'd recommend stopping it in the hope of at least slowing down the trips to the loo.
We don't need carbohydrate particularly not from grains, so it will not do you any harm to so without it until you can get to the bottom of the problem.
If you start to feel really unwell then you might well need to go to A & E - even if it means dialling 999 as if you are one of the other types of diabetic you could have high glucose and ketones which is very dangerous.

Hi. Yes at the moment a palm-full of carbs is too much. All carbs need control including wholegrain. If you are slim or have lost weight recently then T1 is possible. If you are overweight, T1 is unlikely.

Thanks for all your advice. I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow morning so hopefully they'll be able to run some more tests.
Good luck Beth. That's reassuring news.

What are NEEDS as I have not heard of them before? Many parts of the country have different names for similar services!

Little update: They think it could possibly be type 1 but they aren't certain I have an appointment with NEEDS tomorrow to learn how to inject insulin

Good news that they’re taking that possibility seriously. Far too many adults are assumed to be Type 2 when they’re actually Type 1 (you can get Type 1 at any age).

You should feel a lot better on insulin. Once you get your doses right, you’ll be able to control your blood sugar a lot better, eat normally - and stop all the weeing!

What I do not understand is why if they think you have type1 diabetes they are waiting until tomorrow to introduce insulin.

Please please if you feel any worse call 999 or 111 so you can be sorted ASP.

Update: They are 90% sure it's type 1 and started on insulin today. I have a blood test tomorrow and will get the results in 6 weeks to confirm type 1. Thanks for all your advice 🙂

Phew! What a relief for you! I know it might take a bit of getting used to if you are Type 1, but getting the right treatment will make a huge difference.

Phew and thank goodness you now have the elixir of life (Insulin)
