Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi
I'm trying to reduce my blood pressure and wonder if anyone has experience of using Lo-Salt in their diet? Does it work? Are there any problems associated with using it for diabetics?
Any advice would be helpful!
Thank you

I use Lo Salt, but not directly for Blood Pressure.
I use a Low Carb High(er) Fat Way Of Eating (with no medication) to control my Blood Glucose. The side effect of which is weight loss and reduced Blood Pressure (due to that weight loss).

However the LCHF means that I retain less water and so excrete more salt, also no longer eating bananas means that my Potassium levels are lower.
These combine to give symptoms that are known as 'Keto flu', though usually only noticeable in the first 2 weeks of the diet.
To fix both deficiencies, I started adding extra amounts of Lo Salt (which has a 2 to 1 ratio of Potassium to Sodium) to my meals.

I hope this helps.
P.S. There is evidence that our fear of Salt (Sodium) is somewhat misplaced since:
A). it is vital for human and animal life,
B). A study showed that those consuming a rather higher amount of salt than the WHO guidelines have better Blood Pressure than those eating around the recommended amount.

Welcome to the forum @enquirer

I tend to just use regular salt but in small quantities. Iwent for years without adding salt to cooking at all, just occasionally adding a little at the table, thoughthese days sometimes I add some to help soften the onions or whatever too 🙂

I have not used salt in cooking for years too. Only really have salt on fish and chips.

You should probably talk to yr doc about it. LoSalt replaces some of the sodium in normal salt with potassium. I think that's usually not going to be a problem, but it would be if you should be on a low potassium diet for some reason.

Also, according to Wikipedia, LoSalt at some point put out an advisory warning against using it if you're taking various meds, including ACE inhibitors (a common class of blood pressure med), but the link seems to be broken: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_substitute

FWIW, I found cutting out salt wasn't too hard; your bod hardly needs any and it's a habit which might not be too hard to break.
