The Department of Health and Social Care has today issued a Serious Shortage Protocol (SSP) for Lipitor® 20mg chewable tablets, which are a type of statin. I am not sure if any members are taking this medication.

A Serious Shortage Protocol permits a pharmacist to supply a medicine other than the one listed on the prescription where there are significant supply issues with the drug originally prescribed. In this case, it allows them to supply patients with Atorvastatin 20mg instead of Lipitor® 20mg chewable tablets. It is tightly controlled and pharmacists are required to ensure the replacement medication is suitable for the patient.

This SSP may be amended or stopped at any time but currently expires on 12 January 2022. It applies in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, but not in Scotland.

There are no details offered as to the reason for the current shortage.
