Thanks for that, Lovethediabetic.
I must admit I am dismayed that the original application was not enough and that it is taking so long for the DVLA to come to a decision - I had expected that it would be a matter of course if there had been a twelve month period with no hypos.
I would be interested in what extra they need from the doctor, given that he had already judged your husband fit to drive.
I look forward to seeing a post from you that it has all been passed OK and that he now has a licence
Regards
Stan

Hi lovethediabetic,

I am dismayed not to see a post from you telling us that he has his licence back.

ALTHOUGH - I am still in a similar position having reapplied in November and still waiting.

I have discovered that the DVLA have their own particular method of dealing with correspondence in that it takes several days at least for anything received to be put in your file, and the date it is put in is the effective date for dealing with it.
They are ages behind with dealing so a letter from my GP sent sometime in Feb was entered on Feb 22. On checking progress with the DVLA on March 10 it was then that I found out that at that date they were looking at Jan 26 input.
Today, I am told that they are looking at Feb 9 so I still have several weeks before they even look at my file

Their methods are terribly inefficient - my case could have been over and dealt with in Dec had they telephoned, faxed or e-mailed my GP with a simple question, but they wrote a letter with all the inevitable delays.

Enough from me on me, I hope his licence is back and I have missed a post saying so

That's very interesting Stan, to me just now! Cos I'm sitting here in daily dread of losing mine ......

I've had diabetes since i was 18 and actually got my license at 17 but a medical a few years later at my local GP's he insisted that I was not fit to drive a vehicle full visit us which lost me my job i was doing as a courier.

Hope that your license has been given back to you!

Welcome to the forum, Ronnie. Sorry to hear you lost your driving licence and courier job. What are you doing now?

Well, it has arrived at last, just five months after applying.

All this delay has been because my doctor, in relying to a question "has he had any hypos in the past year" , responded "yes". This apparently was not good enough for DVLA Medical , despite the fact that my application stated just the one, so they wrote to the doctor for more information.

This letter was put in the doctor's box 0n 23rd Dec so a week went by without response.

Then the DVLA Medical machine took over and the response was eventually put in my file on Feb 22.

On Mar 10th, I discovered that doctors were examining files dated Jan 26, again on 31 Mar they were looking at Feb 9 and on Apl 14 they had got up to Feb 17. On 23 Apl they got around to Feb 22 and dealt with me at last.

The moral of this story, if indeed there is one, is to be aware that any communication with DVLA Medical take ages to be filed and then the date it is filed becomes the effective date for it to be examined.

Add to this the fact that the questionnaire to the doctor is so badly worded that an intelligent doctor's response is not what they want and you can account for the five months delay.

Anyway, I am delighted to get it back, and Monday will find me taxing the car for May 1st

Stan

Good new Stan. Happy motoring!
