I know I have only been on this for 10 days and my actual dose seems to be fine at 6 units morning and 6 units evening - 12 hours apart. My question is more about the actual timing as I have been told to do it at 10am and 10pm. I take bolus for breakfast between 7-8 and evening between 5.30-7 if that is relevant.

Does it matter if I take the basal close in time to bolus?. Personally I would like to take them closer together in the morning then I would not need to take that pen out with me all day. Similarly in the evening 10pm is a bit early if going out so have to take it with me. How much leeway is there?

Don't know about bolus timing (I'm on Victoza), thought that was tied to eating times. However I like to keep organised so I inject levemir when I wake up (theoretically 7am) and then at 5pm. You might need to move the evening one later on so as to avoid the dawn effect, where it's run out before you wake up.

I split levemir at 7am & 7pm. Bolus breakfast around the same time as my AM levemir.

Only had one problem and that was injecting 10u novorapid instead of levemir one morning.

If I'm basal & bolusing at the same time, I use say left side to basal and right to bolus so the *pools* are not near to each other.

Thanks chips - that is exactly what I needed to hear. It will make life a lot easier - even easier than it has been these last 10 days. To eat when I want to and have an occasional treat with no worries has really changed things as I can now go out for the day with no hypo or food worries.

When on Levemir I took my evening dose at 9:30pm and my morning dose at 6:45am - 7:20am........having your PM dose close to your AM dose is actually recommended in order to assist in getting the waking levels down..

My breakfast bolus/correction was given at the same time as the AM Levemir, obviously in a different site....

And if I had a late one at the weekends my PM dose was a little late, but you should try and be consistent....

So yeah, play about with it.......🙂

When I took both basal and bolus at breakfast time (Lantus) the only thing I had to worry about was keeping the sites far apart. Can't remember Lev's action exactly, but I think it might (like Lantus) create a 'depot' of bound-up insulin beneath the skin that then releases over 24 hrs. Lantus does is by crustallisation, and I think Lev binds with albumin or something like it, but I'd imagine you wouldn't want your bolus to get mixed up with it.

For me it was easy enough to use buttocks for basal (since always at home at that time of day) then used thigh/abdomen for boluses.

Interesting that you actually use different sites for the 2 types. I had thought bolus should go in abdomen as it is a faster acting site. Don't remember reading anything about comparative sites for different types.
Haven't tried buttocks yet - seemed a bit difficult to get needle at the correct angle!!
