Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi guys so I’m newly diagnosed type 2 and on 3 metformin a day. The doctor has told me not to test and wouldn’t give me a kit but I have one as lately have been feeling my levels may have gone up with food not being readily available as before. Anyway my level at the doctors was 18, I managed to get this about 6-8 about 6 weeks ago. I tested a few days ago and it was back up to 10.4. Today I had breakfast, waited 2 hours then tested again and it had went down to 6.3. I had a tin of tuna for lunch with 3 ryvita dark for lunch and have tested again and it’s gona back up to 10.4. I know there was hardly any sugar in dinner. I’m confused.

You need to test both before starting to eat and after, to see how much the actual food increased your BG by. There are 6.5g carbs in each one, so call it 20g. As a person with no insulin of my own, that would increase my BG by 6.0. It hasn't done that with yours - but we don't know what it did do.

Thank you for this. I just see the low sugar and assume all is well. I stopped having carbs altogether for a while but the dietician told me to have them. It’s hard to know what to do for the best

@Clairebear7919
it is all about carbs and not only sugar, and of course you need to have some (source of energy) but not a lot ask your dietician to explain more about simple & complex carbs and what is the best for you to have, complex carbs are better for us since the effect on our BG is not immediate and our bodies take more time to brakes it so we don't see a huge spike.

You for this x

Hi @Clairebear7919

If you test both before and about 2 hours after a meal, you can see the impact of those particular foods that you have eaten. The specific carbs and also the portion size will impact on your glucose levels. If you keep a record of what you have eaten alongside your glucose readings you can start to gather the information that will help you to make changes to your diet, swapping items with lower carbs and/or reducing the portion sizes.

We were surprised when we started doing this ourselves. Carbs were hidden in so much that we were eating, and we then decided on a target for each meal which we still use (ish).

The more you know the greater your chance of managing your Diabetes.

It's useful to know that consuming some fat alongside the carb, will slow the release of those carbs into your body. So - I like Ryvita, the sesame seed ones preferably, again c 6.5g carb apiece, and I butter em! Alternatively I might well have a dollop of mayo on the protein I was having with them - so tuna mayo, chicken tikka mayo - but not were I having eg soft cheese or soft pate, cos that's enough fat without the butter or mayo.

20 gm of carbs from grain - I'd have been even higher.
I don't eat lunch these days, as I find eating morning and evening keeps my levels steadiest, but I eat foods which are under 11 percent carbs, so a lot of salad, roasted veges and stir fries and staying well under 50 gm of carbs, often under 40 gm per day and I have an almost normal Hba1c.
