Hi

I've been on insulin now for 3 weeks, and been taking BG readings about 7 times a day to monitor my levels

Now i go some days from 4.4 up to 15 mmol a day sometimes? is this range bad for me as i'm worrying going from one extreme to another isnt good!

I've also have a few Hypos and the i tend to have something to get the levels back up! is it bad to get back up to high? (around 10) or is it a case of just getting them up away from hypo levels?

Sorry if not explained this very well! not sure how to put it into words!..

Cheers
Ant🙂

Hi Ant, You have only been on insulin for 3 weeks so you are making good progress. In general swinging from 4.4 to 15 is not brilliant, but that happens to me too and I have been on insulin for 8 years! How often do you find you blood sugar going up to 15?

In time you should learn which foods cause your blood sugars to spike and which foods seem to work better, but for now just stick to a healthy diet. Have you been taught to carb count? Which insulins are you taking?

Hi

I've tend to get up to 15mmol area now and then not very often i seem to be sticking to the lower end of the levels!
Not been told about carb counting so eating as normal but eating like a horse since i started insulin! I tend to have a very good diet! loads of veg with dinner and main snacks/deserts are fruit! i only have sugar when i go into hypo's..
I'm being told about a DAFNE or such like courses.. so hoping this may help..

Ant🙂

Hi Ant,
I suspect your ups and downs are due to what is known as the honeymoon period.
Which basicaly means your pancreas works on off before it finally pops it's clogs.

I'd suggest recording the meals you ate when your levels have gone up to 15. Do you return to normal levels i.e. 4-7 before your next meal? If so then it is likely that the insulin you have taken for the previous meal was correct for the amount of carbs in the meal, but the timing caught you out. In time you will learn to time your pre-meal injection so that the insulin begins peaking around the same time as your meal. For most of my meals these days I inject around 15 minutes before eating unless my levels are below 5, in which case I would inject closer to my meal. Before you attempt anything like this though it's best to run it past your DSN, especially since you are so recently diagnosed 🙂 DAFNE should make everything clearer, so hopefully you can get a place soon!

Ant it is still very early days yet , the best way of looking ar results is to record them all , meals included like Northerner suggests 🙂 What are you treating your hypos with ? If you get offered a DAFNE course jump at it , one of the best sources of knowledge i have been provided with :D Good luck Ant

Hi Ant

You have not been taught to carb count, so I am assuming that you are taking consistent doses for breakfasts, lunches and evening meals. This can be a workable approach, but you will probably find that it will help a good deal to keep a food diary and measure (or approximate) the number of grams of carbs you are eating at different times. If you get a good result (neither too high or too low following) try repeating it to see if it works again. Then aim for something else with a similar carb load.

With a bit if luck, you should discover some patterns that work for you 🙂

So tell me Ant - how do you actually treat your hypos, ie what with exactly and how much of it?

If I know anything at all about D, it's that we often overtreat hypos. 😱

The trick is to get it about right, up enough for a comfy margin but not too much. Otherwise you then have a fight on your hands to get it back down again. It's very tempting indeed and let's face it, one's brain is not at it's best when we is hypo! :D
