Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Have just been informed I am diabetic. I was given a level of 56, what does that refer to please. Realise I should have talked more with the doctor, but it was a telephone appointment, so much more difficult than face to face.

Chris

56 is likely to be your Hb1Ac.
This is an indication of your average blood sugars over the last 3 months.
In the UK, a Hb1Ac over 48 is considered diabetic.

This explains it better than I can

Hi welcome to the forum
Please try not to panic ok. Firstly with the right info, and you’ll get loads of that from us and a bit of effort by yourself , diabetes is a condition that can be managed well, we get to eat lovely tasty food.

With an Hb1ac of 56 you have really just crossed the diabetes threshold , 48 gets you into our rather select club.

We are fine with protein of all types and providing you don’t have a condition that requires you to reduce fat intake we are fine with good fats too.

Try to reduce the starchy carbohydrates a bit, ie potatoes, rice, pasta and white bread as these raise our blood glucose quickly , there are good substitutes, till you find ones you like fill up in vegetables.

Hi @sunhillow, welcome to the forum.

An HbA1c of 56 is not massively high (some folk here were in 3 figures) so with some tweaks and a bit of determination you could well make improvements and bring the number down. Carbs are what we cannot cope with, so a reduction in things like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereals, and an increase in green leafy veg, good quality meat and fish, eggs, cheese, will help a lot. Exercise will also help, as will losing a bit of weight if you need to.

There are lots of recipes on here, and loads of advice and support, so take your time, have a read round, and let us know if you have any questions 🙂

Edit: Ljc beat me to it!
