Relationship to Diabetes
Hi posting on behalf of partner . Family history ( gran) double amputation end of her life . Recent type 2 diagnosis. High sugar readings 12/13 plus. On metaformin . Trying no carb diet . But has continuing leg pain calf & thigh . No heat /coldness.. in agony .. took reading was 8 when pain intense. But getting worn down by it all . Trying to loose weight eat healthier not that diet very bad .. likes the odd glass red .. but this leg pain worrying any suggestions or advice .? Got gp appointment to see further help but has got well u are diabetic and not much else recently.

Could definitely ask GP to check for sciatica. My leg pain is caused by intermittent claudication ie hardening of the arteries. If it was diabetic neuropathy, there would be some effect in both legs, usually. Just because anyone has diabetes, never means they cannot have 'other unrelated stuff' wrong with them.

Welcome to the forum @Jayne26

Sorry to hear about your partner‘s leg pain, and that you don’t seem to have had much support from the GP.

Has the leg pain come on following the change of diet to a lower-carb approach? And were the changes you made to the diet quite dramatic? Or was the leg pain one of the things that prompted you seeking help from the GP and getting the diagnosis with diabetes?

Some times rapid reductions in average glucose levels from quite high levels to in range can trigger nerve pain while the body adjusts. This is usually temporary, though can be very uncomfortable and distressing. Sometimes it can help to gradually reduce BG levels over a number of months rather than going ‘all out’ for as rapid a reduction as possible.

Unfortunately, long term elevated BG levels can lead to permanent nerve damage (neuropathy), so trying to keep numbers as in-range as possible helps, but it can be kinder on the nerves (and eyes) to try to take things fairly gently to begin with.

Sciatica?
I've had sciatica twice both times could hardly walk or sleep because of the pain. Not related to diabetes. Both times were in between my Coronary bypass op and my Blood Glucose slowly moving higher finally putting me into the T2 Diabetic range.
