Once again i've been left to get on with it!! Started Gliclazide on monday, thought well i'll give it a few days to settle in and get working properly. After dinner numbers were okay, depending what I eat. Seemed to work best taking it 1/2 hour before.

Anyway, now i'm having major problems with my day time levels.

Before Bed: 10.4
Wake up: 13.3
>ate scrambled eggs
after 2hrs: 13.1
1/2 hour later: 10.1
and I came down by 2 points in 1/2 an hour!

It seems that they are doing something during the day but not enough. I don't even know if these tablets are supposed to be covering day time although my highs aren't as high as I would expect if not. I'm on just 40mg of these as apparently MODY's are really sensitive, but then you have to consider that i'm 4 years into this and going backwards at the end of the day. Just want to mention i've had horrid back pain all day, right side and I reckon it is my kidneys again. Struggling somehow I suppose. Dr said it wasn't but I really think it is!!

So today I wanted to find out what I can do about day levels, I thought maybe taking 20mg in the mornings so 60mg a day. But it's not so easy with tablets I don't know what they do so wanted to consult someone. I phoned the nurses number I was given just in case and had no answer within 2hrs (phoned like 5 times). Left my name and number, still no getting back to me. Yet again i'm left to get on with it myself again!!!!

As for the tablets themselves, as I said they are working just having day time problems since i've been told their peak is 6 - 8hrs. Have no side effects except from dizziness but I can't actually find that on the given leaflet. They are not however fixing my dawn phenomenon and I was so hopeful they would!!! Not sure what night time levels are doing really...

Tomorrow I have a wedding to go to and be in (as a bridesmaid!) and i'm not looking forward to worrying about where my levels are all day. Thing is i'm reluctant to swop to insulin for the day because trying to inject will be hassle with the dresses and I have a fear of injecting in my arms! I'll make sure I keep well hydrated I suppose, it says you shouldn't drink but as far as i've found its just because of lows and well in which case in moderation should be okay as really it's just the same as insulin!

Gliclazide
gliclazide stimulates insulin release from pancreas, and increases weight

This is one of many 'sulphonylureas' There are many others. (Glipizide is another.)
These drugs act on the pancreas to make it release more insulin. Side-effects are generally mild and include feeling sick, bowel changes, headache, and weight gain.

Dose: initially, 40-80 mg daily, adjusted according to response; up to 160 mg as a single dose, with breakfast; higher doses divided; max. 320 mg daily. Ideally gliclazide is taken 30 minutes before a meal.

I could find nothing to imply dizziness as a side effect, perhaps there is something else causing this (hows the blood pressure?).
It would appear that you are on a starting dose and it will need increasing. If its like Metformin it may take some time to kick in. Are you on Metformin as well?

I would hope that your GP has taken a blood test and will know what your kidneys are doing - have you asked?

One thing I am convinced of is that sometimes a particular 'bad' reading is due to something you did the day before. In order to get my morning reading down I have had to be really strict with myself the day before and even the day before that - it seems to depend on what my stomach is doing. Perhaps stress is affecting your digestive process and delaying when your food gets absorbed. Have you noticed a change in your toilet habits?

Not sure I can add to advice already given, but I hope the wedding went well, I'm sure you were a lovely bridesmaid.

I STILL can't get through to the nurses and left my name and number. Feeling so agitated now to be honest, probably due to running high. Thinking I may end up upping my dose regardless of DSN opinion, they probably wouldn't know what to do anyway!

Woke up at an 'okay' 10.7 and I've been in the 14s since 11am and only had eggs & bacon for breakfast. Just had a salad in the hopes it might budge?! Meters aren't showing the same results either despite that they were the other day which is fun too, might try and phone the company to see if they'll send a free one.
