OK, not as impressive as it might look as I didn't make it entirely from scratch. Over the years, as various relatives living arrangements have changed, we have ended up with a lot of bits of beds in our loft. The head and foot parts were very rickety and had been crudely repaired with metal angle brackets and screws. One post appeared to have been used as a scratching post by a cat. So I knocked them to pieces, sanded them down to the bare wood, filled various holes and repaired the damaged parts. They were then glued back together and varnished. The sides were already in good condition, I just had to modify the fixings at the corners which obviously didn't match. The slats were the only parts that required buying new material.
The whole project was prompted by us buying a new mattress, when I took off the old one and saw the sad saggy state of our old bed. It was an inexpensive drawer divan that we reckoned must be at least 27 years old. An additional job was finding a home for all the bedding and towels that were stashed in the drawers. Fortunately we upgraded our boiler last year and I had installed a load of shelving where the hot water tank used to be.
