Arghhh! only just finished tea at 20:45 so it's going to be 24:40 before I can do my bedtime test and let's hope it's not below my target level of 8mmol or I'll have to get 15 - 20g of carbs down me

Do you always test 4 hrs after dinner? I just test whenever I happen to go to bed. If you still have insulin working then you can estimate how much that is based on time since eating it, and then you’ll know how much it could drop you.

Some people do feel more comfortable going to bed 4hrs after their last bolus. We try to eat our evening meal around 6.00-6.30 for this reason.

I do a bit of both if timings don’t work out that way though. Sometimes I have waited up, but I’m also quite happy going to bed with insulin on board.

I'm one that won't go to bed with active rapid insulin, not because I don't know how to calculate what I have left on board but because diabetes is so unpredictable and hypo's don't wake me

I don't test 4 hours after eating: I test before I eat, before I drive (very rare at the moment), when I get up, when I go to bed and when I feel "off".
I usually eat my evening meal at around 8pm so often have insulin on board when I go to bed at around 11:30, especially, if I have split my dose. This does not bother me, especially as I have the Libre to show me the direction my blood sugars are trending.
I may take a correction dose if necessary just before my head hits the pillow. What do those who are nervous about going to bed with insulin on board do if they need a correction? Do they stay up another 4 hours?

I try to eat around 6pm. I don’t test at 4 hours - ever (I can’t remember doing that even once). I test before I eat and often 2hrs after, or even earlier if I’ve had a meal where I’ve guessed carbs. Then I test before I drive, before I exercise, etc.

I correct at bedtime too, but aim for a slightly higher final number than I would during the day. I eat supper sometimes too, and bolus for that if I need to.

It was my basal insulin that gave me nocturnal hypos when I was on injections. That was (is?) the one to watch IMO.

@Lucyr
Hi Lucyr, when I test on my meter (accu-chek) mobile then enter it into mysugr app the app tells me how much insulin I've still got on board (if I enter a random amount of carbs into the app even though I probably won't be eating depending on bg) but I struggle with knowing how much the insulin will drop me :(

You should have a correction factor if taking fast acting insulin. Eg if your bg was high at 10 and you take an extra 1u to drop you to 7 then your correction factor is 1u to drop 3 mmol.

Hi @Lucyr my Correction factor is 2mmol
