At risk of diabetes
Morning all! I've been looking around (online, in supermarkets) for low carb bread and am pleased to see so many options, as long as I don't look at the cost! I recently got a Livlife loaf from Waitrose and while the flavour is very good, I was astonished to see each slice was not much bigger than a playing card (albeit thicker)! It's absolutely no good for making sarnies with. So I'm on a mission to see if there's a decent, normal sized low carb bread available anywhere and thought you folks might know. Any ideas?

Following with interest 🙂

I've been having my normal Morrisons wholemeal bread but two slices is 32g of carbohydrate (according to MyFitnessPal) and I don't know if that's high or low for bread.

That's pretty high. The Livlife bread I'm using at the moment is only 4g of carbs per slice but, as I say, the slices are really small! Hovis Nimble wholemeal might be a better bet as it's proper sized slices I think, and is 8.1g of carb per slice (and also 50cals per slice). I'd prefer less but once I've finished the Newcastle Diet, calories won't be so much of a thing.

That's marketing for you.
Make it low carb by halving the size and doubling the price.

If you used 2 slices of a normal sized slices loaf and cut it into 4 triangles that would be smaller than 2 slices of LivLife then. What's actually wrong with a small sandwich? or only using one slice of bread cut or folded in half? or using Ryvita at c.6g apiece - you're doing this to try and sort your diabetes, not mass catering for the football team.

Someone once said they liked the crustless bread for less carbs than normal. It’s the same carbs as just slicing the crusts off normal bread yourself though just more expensive as paying someone else to slice them off for you

Thanks for that.

A Livlife loaf is actually 3.4g of carbs per slice and 80 calories. It tastes like any other multi grain bread and gives you more variety in your food choices. I also eat Ryvita which is 7.1g of carbs and 155 calories, not that I'm watching my calories, well apart from making sure I use them all up! The bread is like a real treat for me and the low carb option that Livlife provides is very welcome. I can cope with the portion size rather than go without.

@LydiaDustbin have you tested levels before and after? You may be able to cope with another slice or 2. Yes the sandwich or toastie is on the small side but the taste is great. I'd rather have it than not even at £2 per loaf and especially as other breads are likely to raise my BG level.

I make my own bread and will be making Keto rolls for the first time this weekend. Could be a game changer. We'll see.

I gave up on messing about with these pathetic low carb breads .

I eat less bread in general if I can but try not to punish myself and just eat a normal loaf
It may well come to that if I can't find anything suitable.

I do actually quite like the taste of the Livlife loaf. I'm currently doing the Newcastle Diet (about halfway through and 10lbs down) so at the moment every calorie counts but once I've finished that I may well add an extra slice or two - it's just the size of each slice is SO small, it gets stuck in my toaster and I can't put a decent sized poached egg on it (this, I realise, is me being picky here!) so I'm just wondering if there's any palatable low carb bread where the slices are actually more a normal size, just to make my life easier!

I watch calories, Ryvita is around 35 calories, not 155.
No idea on carbs though.

Correct @travellor. Not sure where the 155 came from. I must have been multi tasking. They are actually 37 calories per slice and very nice too.

What I like about Ryvita is that there are different varieties and now, each box is packaged inside with 2 individual wrappers - so less have a chance of deteriorating once you've opened them - though having said that it takes bloomin ages for em to do that unless they're constantly exposed to moisture for some reason. My current favourite is sesame seed which the packet tells me is 6. something each so hardly breaks the bank carb wise. There's no limit to how high you can pile whatever you fancy eating on one.

There’s one called Hi Lo (5 carbs) at Sainsburys. Slices are smallish but not too thin. I buy low carb rolls from Seriously low carb (online) Plain or seeded, expensive but filling and delish. Only 2 carbs. They do very low carb loaves too, but small thin slices. (2 carbs)

Yes you are right there are lots of varieties which are all yum and they are all have a slightly different amount of cab but as you say are low and delicious with different toppings. I like Stilton cheese with Salmon.

Works same way for low calorie bread, make slices smaller & bingo there you have it.

Really like sourdough bread from Polish Bakery, not low carb but slices are really small so no good for sandwiches but are great to top with things like eggs.

Thank you, this is useful information! I've spotted the Hi Lo bread in my local Sainsburys previously but they had none last time I was in there - I may well try it if I can find it again. I've seen the Seriously Low carb products online and wondered about them - I want to reintroduce hot dogs in finger rolls and burgers in buns when I come off the diet so have been considering them. I'll be the only one eating them (husband doesn't need low carb stuff so can have ordinary ones) and it won't be very often and they can go in the freezer, so the expense won't be too much of a problem, but I'm glad to hear they're delicious. I'll give them a go.
