Two thirds of people with Type 1 diabetes and almost half of Type 2 patients do not receive all nine annual health checks to manage their diabetes effectively, according to the biggest ever audit of diabetes in England and Wales.

I think you only need to pop on here any day of the week to see that this is the case, sadly :( I've had pretty excellent care throughout, but have noticed that I haven't been called for my foot check this year, normally in April.

Excuse my ignorance, I haven't had help from any of the health care member's in my area and was wondering what the foot check is for ???
 
My clinic tend to have a quick look at my feet at the annual review however I would have to say I am struggling to know what the 9 checks are. I am certainly not called to my clinic 9 times a year
 
Foot check means checking circulation and sensation in feet - circulation by touch - warm is good, cold is bad; sensation by touching feet in several places with a nylon filament, while patient's eyes are closed.

It's perfectly OK for all 9 tests to be done in one visit, although often blood is taken before main visit, so results can be discussed. In fact, I would refuse to attend 9 times, as I have other things to do in a year!
 
I'm guessing quite a few of the nine are bloods aren't they?

Here's what I can think of:
  1. feet/sensation
  2. eye photography
  3. Bloods - hbA1c
  4. Bloods - Kidney function [Creatinine?]
  5. Bloods - full lipid panel/cholesterol [would that count as more than one?]
  6. Blood pressure
  7. Injection sites?
  8. Urine? [clutching at straws now]
  9. ?

It would be good to do a poll on this Alan on the forum to see how many of us get any/each of these done.

Weight -check
Blood pressure - check
HBA1C - check
Urinry Albumin - not sure, is this just the sample you take when they dip with urine stick?
Creatinine - check (via bloods)
Cholesterol - check (via bloods)
Eyes - check
Feet - check
Smoking - only every asked at diagnosis!!
