At the beginning of the year I was switched to the Sayana Press injection from Depo due to "some" areas struggling to get hold of the Depo, I did 2 of them and then there were manufacturing/supply issues with it so put back on to Depo, I'm due in February and have been told to call and see if Sayana Press is available again yet or if it will in fact be Depo again, since we've been switched back there doesn't seem to be an issue of getting hold of it and although I'm all for a self administering injection it has left me with a slight problem, the place in my thighs where I did it has been left with a small indent (I assume due to the fact it does form a lump under the skin when injected and absorbs over the following 13 weeks) I just wondered if you thought I might have a case to fight to stay on Depo due to the fact this scarring could cause problems with insulin absorption? TIA xx

Hello! Not really the absorption thing because your body has a huge surface area and there are many places where you can inject insulin, but I don't 'know'; that is just gut feeling.

However I didn't just answer to give you that peice of non information. My question is; shouldn't you be able to stay on your drug of choice because it was working for you and you prefer it?

I only use thighs and stomach for novorapid as my team doesn't recommend arms and those are the only suitable places for the self administered contraceptive, still recovering from an eating disorder so I don't have much of a huge surface area anywhere

I don't know, I got information from a fellow Type 1 who requested to stay on Depo for the same reason I want to and she was allowed to stay on Depo because of it, I'll see what I'll have to do when I'm at the health centre for bloods on Monday

You should be able to request to stay on depo anyway if you prefer that but it does no harm to give additional reasons. I would want to get the injection site checked out too.

They don't need checked, its common with it because it pools under the skin (you can actually see the lump where it sits after doing it) and absorbs over the 13 weeks I just cant risk having more and more of them left, I'll pop to reception when I'm at the health centre on Monday and ask them what I'll need to do like if I need to chat to a doctor about it, if I do I'll try and get a telephone appointment after the 21st as I'll get my consultant on my side, I really don't mind the Sayana as yes it easier than needing an appointment but I just cant take the risk of more scarring
xx

How did you get on with it?

I’m having the implant in my arm replaced next month. Says it expires on 13th and my appointment is not until 20th, husband said it has some run over time so we will be fine. But I’m not sure about that.

I asked receptionist when I was at the health centre last week and she said they weren't expecting Sayana back until August/September so she booked me in for a Depo on the 18th February, I spoke to the consultant about it yesterday and he says I should definitely stick with the Depo with Sayana scarring me and fear of affecting absorption so I should be fine with staying on Depo, I know the injection has a 1 week window either way but I wouldn't know about the implant xx

I should really this is my third. But saying that it’s three years since it went in so I should let my self off for forgetting.

I need to pop in on Friday anyway so I will ask if they have any sooner appointments. Need the medical exemption renewal form.

Glad you got sorted!
