Can anyone recommend a decent flavoured lactose cheese please?

How are you with sheep's milk?

Or could you take lactase enzyme tablets?

Or you completely lactose free, or can you tolerate some low lactose cheeses?

I have coeliac disease and noticed after a lot of detective work that any milk product is making me unwell even milk in coffee.
From researching on the net both conditions quite often go hand in hand. :(

Yes, I've read that as well.

The lactose free cheeses simply have lactase enzyme added so the lactose is broken down, they should all taste as good as any dairy cheese.
But they are mass produced so never taste as good as an artisan cheese.

Some hard cheeses are quite low in lactose naturally, it tends to be the wetter cheeses that are high, cottage cheese for example.

Sheep milk is allegedly a different protein structure to cows milk, so doesn't react in the same way. Possibly depending on your gut enzymes though.

Do you have a preference in cheeses?

Strong cheddar 🙂
Thanks for the info will start a hunt tomorrow depending on the weather it was -6 in Cornwall last night with black ice everywhere.

Didn't know that, love good strong cheddar.

Iceland do a surprisingly good cheddar.
It's their own bargain block, very large, (not good if you can't put it down!), And amazingly cheap for what it is.
It's my go to cooking cheese, but it's also good on a cracker, (I'm very fussy over mature cheddar, it needs flavour, and that good crystal texture.

Will have to try it.

Asda also do good strong mature cheddar, nothing wrong with own brands & are often better than big name brands.

Oh I quite agree, I use Lidl cheeses normally but not keen at the moment due to the issue with my tummy. Will if I can have a chat with GP tomorrow and see if I can have any enzyme replacers on prescription to try.

I was just looking at my pack of Somerset Crunchy Vintage Cheddar from Lidl yesterday and it is <0.1g carbs per 100g so it will have a really negligible amount of lactose in it.

Backs up what the dietitian told me then, she was talking about mature cheddar.

Thanks, will have a look when I next shop. Have tried their strong cheddar this evening with no problems so far. Gluten free bread is only palatable when it's toasted with cheese 🙂

Swear tasted best ever mature cheddar on Thursday travelling near Scotch Corner, place was called Mainsgill farm shop on A66, they have great selection of meats & cheeses & some of the blue cheeses were devine, had samples on counter so tried fair few but their own mature cheddar was best, so strong & flavoursome.
