Relationship to Diabetes

Hi i'm new to this forum and was wondering if you would help me.

I have been diabetic since oct 2001 so coming up to the 10th anniversary, 3yrs ago i was found to have slight increases in protein in my urine 5.6 rather than below 3mmol/l. my consultant thought this was due to bad blood sugar control (had an HB1AC of 8.4 at this stage - it's now 6.4 and has been for the last year) - i was sent onto the DAPHNE course last yr and i have managed to reduce my protein levels back down to 0.08mmol/L (well within the normal levels).

I had a blood test recently which showed my creatinine levels had risen to 95mmol/L which puts me in the CKD stage 2 with an eGFR of 63mls/min. My confusion is if i don't have an abnormal level of proteinuria does this really put me within that CKD or should i be asking for more tests to investigate the reasons behind the reduced GFR?

sorry for the very long post many thanks for getting this far - i'm also on ACe inhibitors at 5mg per day -

should also add that the reason i didn't get anything done about the proteinuria for 2yrs was that the hospital didn't inform me or my GP until sept of last yr and it was still at the original level it had been for 2yrs

Hi Confus'd

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry, I don't know much about creatinine (other than recognising the name from the usual list of bloods...

I did read a nice neat analogy of the protein in urine thing though... The kidneys act like a filter with a very fine 'mesh' to strain out the gunk before the urine is passed. High BG levels can damage the mesh and create tiny holes which then allow some of the minute protein albumin to pass through. The more holes, the more protein leaks through and the more indication of damage.

Hi I'm sorry to hear of your kidney problems. Protein was found in my test, but it was only a small amount so my Dr put me on Ramipril and I have been taken them ever since and no protein has been found since. My doctor put me on the tablets to stop the protein from progressing further and it worked.
My dr said kidney problems are unfortunately very common with Diabetes, and I have had the big D for 22 years.

I hope things start to get better for you. Take care now. Sheena

Hi confustimicated. Welcome 🙂

I'ma afraid I know very little about the renal side of things since I've not yet had to worry about it but it sounds like your hospital should be under investigation.

As implied (I think (possibly?)) by Mike, it may that once you're in the club, you stay there, or do the kidneys repair themselves over time, in a similar way to the liver ?

Rob

Hi Guys thanks for getting back to me so quickly i think once you are in the club thats it they don't tend to repair like the liver does - i think i may chase up my doc tomorrow and have a chat about it with him thanks for all the help though 🙂
