Pretty sure I have a kidney infection and feeling downright miserable. Called my GP - receptionist tells me there are no appointments for 10 days. TEN DAYS!! I explained I think I have a kidney infection and I'm a Type 1 diabetic. Response? Oh well you can see a nurse. Taken the appointment but pretty cross. BGS are being crazy, had a fever last night which is gone this morning but now getting severe pain in my stomach too to top it all off. Argh!
 
Last time I had that problem it was a case of phoning 111... 111 told me to call the GP surgery and get an appointment, strangely when I told the surgery that 111 had told me to call, a same day appointment arrived.

If you don't get luck that way, then you call 111 again. They may send you in.

You may have a urinary tract infection, perhaps you should contact 111 and ask for advice. Shame on your GP service

Dr let's me have a prescription for Ciprofloxacin- 5 days worth, at home. But even if I suspect an infection, I don't start it unless my temp goes up to 37.5. (used to be 38°) And that's only if it's a weekend. But it's nice to have it in hand if I do need it.

Sadhbh, please be aware of the risks associated with Fluoroquinolones of which Ciprofloxacin are one. My friend ended up in bed for 3 months after taking a quinolone for a routine infection because one of their side effects in susceptible people is serious damage to the tendons (amongst other serious side effects). This friend is now highly active in the campaign against these antibiotics and there have been a huge number of class actions in the States against the manufacturers. The FDA have issued black box warnings on their use. Please read;

I have it expressly written into my Care Plan with the GP never to give me Fluoroquinolones.

I wouldn’t normally be so strident about this but am aware of the damage many people have experienced. There are other antibiotics I’d always want to try first.
 
Must be a powerful antibiotic as it's listed as one given to people exposed to anthrax and certain types of the plague!!

Absolutely right Dave. As the FDA say;


Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics that kill or stop the growth of bacteria. While these drugs are effective in treating serious bacterial infections, an FDA safety review found that both oral and injectable fluroquinolones are associated with disabling side effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and the central nervous system. These side effects can occur hours to weeks after exposure to fluoroquinolones and may potentially be permanent.

Because the risk of these serious side effects generally outweighs the benefits for patients with acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, the FDA has determined that fluoroquinolones should be reserved for use in patients with these conditions who have no alternative treatment options.’

There are occasions when there’s no alternative but to consider these powerful and potentially toxic antibiotics but not for routine infections. My friend runs a support group for those affected and the stories are harrowing!
 
I agree. This type of antibiotic is not appropriate for routine urinary tract infections, it’s far too powerful and risky. It’s just lazy GP thinking. Cheap and cheerful co-trimoxazole will knock off 99% of common bugs in UTIs. Along with plenty of fluids to flush the system through.
 
Really? Geez, I have never heard of the Flouro--- I am not quick to take it, if I suspect I generally bring in a sample so they can culture it.

Last time I had it IV, (in hospital) I started the tingling in my arm and they took it straight out. Put me on a -cillain of some kind. But the urologist said I should still take the oral tablet in future. Even though they make me feel worse on each successive day. I just thought it was because I had had it so much in my lifetime. It's been the most often prescribed to me since the late 70's at least!

I will read the articles, thanks. I am shocked! What about Bactrim? That's one I used be given sometimes. I thought it was the same but a different brand.

Not everyone reacts adversely to the Quins but the problem is they can’t predict who will have an adverse reaction. I’m surprised it’s used much here in the U.K., I’ve never been offered it thankfully. Much more common in the States despite the warnings,
 
I ignore a kidney infection as I didn’t realise what the sever pain in my back was and I had no UTi so did not think of kidneys. I had a temperature of 39, and the shakes. When I eventually described this 111 they had called an ambulance immediately. I ended up in hospital and on IV antbiotics for five days.

Don’t ignore it if you continue to feel rough.
 
I saw the nurse I had the original appointment with, had a temp when I went to see her but she couldn't find any trace of UTI so she sent me back out to wait to see the doctor. The doctor thinks it may be kidney stones so I've been referred for an ultrasound scan, and been put on Trimethoprim tablets. Should have a scan in a matter of days according to the doc. Thanks for all your help guys 🙂 x
