Hi all,

This morning Alex has ketones - i cant tell from the strip if its 1.5 or 0.5 because the colour coding appears to be in between! Anyway he has just had 2 large glasses of water - but i cant remember if there is anything else we should be doing? He has had food this morning and covered by insulin. His level was 17 at waking - so i have given correction doses. Bev

sounds like a good plan, be sure to keep monitoring him. have you asked about testing blood ketones? much more accurate

hope Alex is feeling better

Bev, the optium exceed meter uses strips to test blood ketones which is much more accurate than urine testing, which can be several hours delayed.

I would test again as 0.5 is fine but 1.5 is quite high

here is the advice I was given on diagnosis, and again on dafne

below 0.6 - are in the normal range

0.6 - 1.5 and your bg is higher than 16.7, may indicate the development of a problem, follow your healthcare professional advice.

above 1.5 and bg above 16.7, you may be at risk of developing dka, contact your healthcare professional immediately for advice.

do not want to worry you but you cant mess about with ketones, in children I cant advise so not sure if the advice would be different. You should be able to get the meter from your dsn as this is the one they would prefer type 1s to use for accurate ketone testing.

take care

Hi Bev, wasn't around earlier, sounds like you got great advice, how are things now?

I hope Alex is feeling better. Encouraging Alex to eat and keeping the fluids up is always a good plan.

Phew - what a day! At one stage his level was 32 with ketones!

However he has drank loads of water and we have been correcting all day and just now he was down to 14! I know thats still rubbish - but its going the right way! Thanks for all your replies. Bev

hi bev,

thats such an improvement tho any lowering is good x

Glad Alex is getting better. You are a brilliant nurse too.

Hi Patricia,
This morning he woke on 14 - seems to like that number! He seems to have stabilised - no ketones - so kept im off school as he needs a bit of LTC i think! Thanks for asking. 🙂 Bev

Yes, recovery just can't go amiss, can it? Was it ever a real cold, or just a 'feeling poorly' kind of thing? There are some funny ones about..
